3 things I am wondering about...what kind of floors will work well for a 1.) control/mixing room, 2.) live sounding room, 3.) dead sounding room....

In the live room...I am going to do wood..

not sure about the other two. Either carpet..or like linoleum maybe. I want something that is fairly dead...but, maybe gives just a hint of character..becuase the rest of the walls will all be absorbative panels/foam.

The room will be used for both live band rehearsal...and drums mainly. probably guitar amps too though.

So, any ideas on flooring would be great, thanks

(not doing a floating floor)

1) Timber
2) Timber or tiles
3) Double underlay carpet.

timber in the control room? i thought control rooms needed to be dead?

No - control rooms need to be flat!! why timber?? well it's totally reflective so it won't interfere with the acoustics, AND it's easier to move around on a timber floor than on carpet which will always wear out around the console and look tackey :):)

Wes,

Just read your post... I also live in Atlanta and am in the process of building a studio in my basement which consists of a sound room (11x14) and control room (11x13). My basement is totally unfinished so the sky is the limit.

Any tips/tricks you can share before I get started? Why did you choose not to float the floor?

Thanks!

hehe...why did I choose not to float the floor...becuase I am a poor man :)

I can't really offer you any tips per se....I am just doing this thing on the cheap...with very restrictive budget and space.

My control room is going to be like 7x6, recording room 10x10 or so.

If you are doing it yourself or whatever..need a hand with some things...i lead a pretty boring life..wouldn't mind checking out what someone else is doing with theirs. let me know.
