Hey,

I am looking for a cheap omni-directional mic. I am about to tune my room, using Ethan W.'s Sonar hz test and it calls for an omni mic. I don't have one.

I don't want to spend a lot, but I also don't want it to just be a "throw-away" mic. I may find a use for it someday. Maybe. :D

Besides this test, I don't really know what I'd record using an omni. Any suggestions?

Thanks!

I have a couple of the Behringer ECM8000s. I doubt they are as flat as the picture on the box would suggest, but I would guess they are flat enough for basic room setup. They work great on classical guitar, too.

Behringer ECM8000.

Supposed to be a measurement mic for the Ultracurve EQ/RTA.

Got two for like $60 but they are now going for about $40 new.

I sold one because it was significantly noisier than the one I kept.

I am looking for another to have a pair of omnis.

Great bang for buck mic.
Does not handle hight SPLs very well.

THANKS a LOT guys.

From what I've read, most mics are flat below 300hz anyway, and that's the biggest "problem area" in room setup. I don't know how much real recording I'll do with an omni, as I don't use mics very much. Vocals mainly. So, for room setup, that sounds like just the ticket!

Thanks again!

Most mics might be flat under 300hz but you still need omni directional or you could get possible proximity effect. Also your TRYING to pick up the room so the cardiod might not give very accurate results of the room but only what is in front of it.

But thats why the Behringers are probably ok. They are omni and use a good sony capsule. So if the all mics are flat, which i disbelieve anyway, then the omni should be perfect for this application.

Ibrow, What is Ethans W's Sonar test?

Ethan's kind of a star in the Studio building forum lower down on the board.

This link to his site:

http://www.realtraps.com/videos.htm

Has some good videos on doing the test and setting up the traps in the room. The link to the test is also there. 46MB. In one of the videos, that runs about 18 minutes, it shows them do the test on the room before treatment, and then they put up treatment, then do the test again. It's pretty cool if you want to "tune your room".

I'm just itching to try it just to find out where the peaks and nulls are. My room will look like a SAW. LOL! :D You need an omni mic to do the test though, and thus, my question.

Check it out. A great site. Gives you some pretty good how-to's to build the traps also.
