I've printed out and read countless articles on EQing, but nothing really made complete sence or gave specifics as far as what to do to specific instruments to get specific sounds or help them sit right in a mix until this article...

If you're as lost as I am in the world of EQ, I strongly suggest this page. It's become a bookmark i constantly come back to.

Enjoy!

hey ben! good to hear from you! everything's going well! we're actually almost done recording our first CD and we've been gigging around San Francisco a bunch. we've even had the chance to play in LA a couple months ago...so all is well! our site is http://www.bagoftoysmusic.com ...I hope all is well, and thanks!

Congrats! Glad to hear you're doing well.

So I see you came up with a band name..I like it!

Good luck on the new CD. Have you been getting it out to any A&R people at record labels?

hey thanks! nah...haven't sent it out to anyone yet cuz we're still actually recoding it. to tell you the truth, i don't know if i'd know what to do with it to get it in the hands of A&R people. We were kind of hoping that someone would approach us some day down the road if we looked like something worthy. we did have a woman from Rolling Stone Magazine come up to us and take our card and demo...something about wanting to possibly use us in some kind of "up and coming bands" thing, but that was like a month ago, and we've never heard back... typical i guess...

Thanks! it's good to hear from you!

Well, I'll shed a little light on the process for you:

It's not by accident that your tunes will end up in the hands of A&R at a record label. You have to know the process. My ex girlfriend is into the entertainment industry here in NYC, and she worked at Sony/BMG (largest record label on the planet) legal dept. for a while when we were dating, and I got to meet and chat with one of the top legal execs over there...and this is what he told me:

The only way the A&R people will not throw your demo immediately away, is if it arrives via your own legal representation. ie: an entertainment lawyer/agency. They are not permitted to listen to anything that doesn't have legal representation.

So when you're interested in pursuing that avenue when the time is right, at least now you know a little bit of how the system works.

Keep shreddin'

Ben

ok...let me get this straight....you will not be seen if you do not have a lawyer to give them the CD? that sounds a little extreme...

But true according to "All You need to Know about the Music Business" by Donald S. Passman.

I highly recommend it.

Indie labels are not so strict. The big labels, yes.

in reference to an acoustic guitar.
"I really boosted the middle and upper frequencies, though: 10 dB at 2 kHz and 9 dB at 7.1 kHz."

that's scary.. i never boost tracks by that much.
in my experience if i'm considering BOOSTING a band by more than 3 or 4 db i've recorded it wrong.

shrug, maybe i should start trying some more aggressive EQing and see how it goes.

Exactly. They won't even open anything that doesn't arrive that way. Too many potential legal problems if they do.

I like your music too. I think I want to buy the cd when it comes out. Thanks for the article
