Best dynamic mic for micing guitar amps.

i have used sure 57's on electric guitar cabs and been very satisfied with the results. Lately I have been using my studio projects C-1 about 2 feet from the speaker cabinet and on SOME things (blues, jazz, country) the C-1 is excellent.

I like sure sm 57's the best on distorted rock guitar....but if i need to capture touch and semi clean tone I like the large diaphrame condensers better.

I have tried the sm 57 on the speaker combined with the C-1 a little further back.....but on distorted guitar I don't end up using the LDC track and on the cleaner stuff I usually throw out the sm 57 track.

lol...

Chessrock you might have got a bit lucky to get it that cheap. I've only saw the price on one page so maybe the price I found was a little high to begin with. It was close to 400, is that high for that mic or is that about right?

I might have to just go with the good old SM57. Being Canadian I'll have to pay $20-$30 more than the Americans which sucks but I know those mics last forever. I've had an SM58 for years and it still looks like new and I never had a problem with it.

Keep the suggestions coming though if anyone has something new to add to the ones already listed.

Thanks,

Well sonicpaint, after you get your Shure SM57... go a head and get a Sennheiser MD421... awesome mic. ;)

If you are micing a distorted guitar amp, a cheap mic (even RS) works pretty good.

I use a SM57, but for years I used a Radio Shack mic; the SM57 is better, but not by much--at least on distored guitar amps.

wait a minute.... you have a sm58 already? if your worried about money then dont buy a sm57, they are practically the same mic. just unscrew ball.

I would go with the MD421 if you can afford it, or 441.

Small diaphragms for clean guitar (thats what i like at least)

SM57 on lighty distorted to medium distorted bright guitar.

Sennheiser MD421 on heavily distorted mid frequency guitar.

Thats the way i like it anyway. Never liked the SM57 on heavy distorted stuff.

NO DONT GET A CHEAP NADY! I bought a nady starpower and it sounds horrible. I dont know much about the other mics but from what i hear they are crap.

The band I work with got a kit of these for micing drums.

Good enough for recording practice I guess.

The environment is soo wacked out that I cant really tell how nothing sounds. We need to treat the control room.

I didnt like the Nady's for live at all, but that was just my opinion.
