Best Dual Tube Compressor and Mic Pre

I'm happy with anything that sounds good. I'm the type of person, who doesn't like to hear the compression working, but still hear there are some dynamics in a mix. I like my outboards to be as versatile as possible so I can use them for a variety of uses. then again, since I haven't been in this market before I'm assuming that these are all apples and oranges and no aprange is available.

So now I have $450 left to get new equipment. Now I'm thinking of getting a HHB Radius 3 and forgoing a new mic pre or a RNC and a RNMP together. What do you guys think?

Put your $450 somewhere, preferably in to something interest-bearing, and steadily build it up to around the $1,000 range. At that point, look around for some real tube gear or something nice you will keep around and be happy with for years to come. In the meantime, scour ebay regularly for something called the VMP2. If one becomes availble, then jump on it.

thanks for reminding me, I actually have one of those vmp-2's. Got it used a few years ago for cheap and figured I resell it at some point. It's been in my rack for about 2 years now and rarely gets used. Well actually it doesn't get used at all. It's ok, better than i expected it to be. Look to e-bay, a vmp-2 coming to your neighborhood soon.

I agree with the idea of saving up $1000 before you get something. When you do, I would forget about tubes and take a close look at this --

Street price about $1000. Stereo, Trident-style Mic Pres, Fet Comps, EQs.

Just what the doctor ordered. Keep your VMP-2, it's all the tubular sound you'll need.

screws, why did you have to post THAT! Now I want it and it's all
your fault.

Don't laugh guys, however, any of the Meek compressors from the
C2 or MC2 up can add some tube-like tone to thicken things up.
And it will stay "different" enough with whatever other type of gear you get.
Just another option if you need a "quick fix".

Chris

Thanks everyone! You've been a big help, I'm probably going to sell some old guitar gear that I dont use. I'll shop around, and head down to Mercenary someday soon and see what sounds good. Thanks!

Okay....I've decided to save up, but after looking at the market and such I have found 2 things that I have found very appealing. My local used music store is selling a HHB Radius 3 for $150. Is this as good or better than a RNC? I haven't used either, I'd just like some guidance. Thanks!

Hey sorry Chris,

I want one too. (ATC-2) Seems like it will be a great deal for the dough. And everything I've heard about the old Trident pres and eqs tells me it's the rock and roll sound I've been looking for. Forward and in yo' face. Plus a pair of FET comps to boot! Too much!

For me it's easily avalon or Sebatron.
Some of the Avalon stuff is really coool.tooo much
We've cut some mean (i mean mean) shit through that gear.
But recenly picked up myself a vmp-4000e by Sebatron.
Check 'em out at www.sebatron.com

I'm thinking of picking up the veqc_2000 later on this week.
Anyone tried it?I'll let you know how i go.
Thanx again Steve
