hey, i didn't listen to the first version, but the 2nd one sounds pretty cool to me! i can't believe you had to point out that you weren't trying to copy the song note-for-note.

i think this is rockin the shit, and a punked-up version of any traditional pop favorite is always going to be a crowd-pleaser. as i listened to it i was picturing a club crowd just loving it.

and the mix sounds great to me. i wish i could get everything to sit so well, but normally everything just sounds crowded. nice job.

hellz yeah! i dig it! like what you did with the bass! still diggin the vox!! Although... I could use some more of that tasty guitar solo... :)

Dogman ~ Thanks man!

drossfile ~ Yeah I really had a shitty bass track on that 1st try...I am mainly a guitarist, so I tend to play lead bass on my stuff, and get kinda noodly...I also had a real treble tone going on ( I love Rik's)..yeah, I definitely set out to not do a copy ,but rather, my own interpretation of the song...if I can get my band to try it, our singer is much better and it may rock! Thanks for your comments...appreciate it!

Thanks man, I'm gonna re-do that guitar solo....appreciate your comments!

Thanks for all the great replies!

Dogman - Yeah, I'm gonna retry those vocals without the vibrato singy type vibe....should be interesting....

Greg_L - Thanks man, I wish I could my sound as tight and heavy as yours....I'll keep working on it!

heatmiser - Thanks...this is a tune I have sung along with forever, so I really thought I could pull it off....as far as my singing..I have no professional training or experience (:p)...but I'm gonna try it again with a little different approach.

Today, I totally cut my bass and guitar parts(except for the lead guitar) and re-did them...hopefully the bass is a little tamer..I really tried not to play lead bass this time around ....I think the guitars may be in a bit better place in the mix now as well....will take on the vocals in a few days so , unfourtnatly..it's still the same vocal tracks, I did take almost all the delay off the lead vocal so its pretty dry....

Sounds awesome. I'm really loving it. :)

If those vox are dry, what the hell kind of room are you tracking in? Are you like 10 feet from the mic? It almost sounds like you're singing into the wrong end of the mic. :p

This isn't a criticism - I've just always wondered why your vocals always have this chorus, phasey, roomy sound to them. It almost sounds like you're tracking in a shower stall or something.

its not just the vocals....also the bass....horrendous...seriously....how can you play this and not know???? some fundamental questions need to be asked here about tone ..pitch and everything else ....just listen to the original and then play this...back to back...just as an education......
I think it's pretty fucking obvious that he's not trying to be an exact copy of the original. How can you hear this and not know?

A late night caffeinated attempt...

i thought it sounded just like the original! :)

Track has a nice sound quality...It does sound like there are some pitch/key issues however its kind of freaky to hear it...makes me feel like im stoned and I have not touched the stuff in 10 years...

I think maybe a chord or 2 seems off a bit...hard to say though because I have not learned this song.

Overall I liked it...I didnt turn it off and I listened to the whole song twice...I think the song may be so off its on if you know what I mean...its so bad its good.

:D

Ha, well thats a new description I haven't heard (makes me feel like I'm stoned) :p...I guess if it entertains ya thats cool...I'll take "its so bad it's good" any day :D
thanks for listening!

Had to take another listen...needed my fix...lol...I like the sound you have on this...it is pretty cool sounding...it almost sounds like a record on an old turntable where the belt is a bit worn...I dont mean that in a bad way...its a unique sound.

Didnt want you to think I didnt like it because I do...its pretty freaky to listen to.

ive listened to it about 6 or 7 times now...the vocals seem to sound a bit off however it kind of grows on ya.

It's got a cool old garage band quality that I haven't heard in a long time..damn I miss those days..

Big Elton fan, and I`ve gotta say this was an original version I liked it.
It had a nice rockin vibe to it.

The vox were different than Eltons:p, but hey when he made that song he was at his peak when it came to vocal preformances.
Its a hard tune to sing.

kudos on another smokin tune man:)

Dude, don't listen to the haters. I love it! It's raunchy and edgy Rock this shit man! :)

I agree!:D Its raunchy, fun, and puts a whole new spin on it. I love to hear abstract as opposed to emulative covers, and this is unique and original. Yeah, its not the best vocal in the history of recording, but the point is being made and its working.

Anfontan It's got a cool old garage band quality that I haven't heard in a long time..damn I miss those days..

I miss those days too! I did go for a rough and raw vibe ...still not happy with the guitars tho'...working on redoing the solo...
Thanks for listening!

jpw23 Ditto.....cool stuff, I like it

Thanks man, appreciate it!

Hey Nak, nice to hear from ya! I knew I couldn't pull off the Elton vocal, or get close, so I just tried to do it my way...I always liked the way the song sounded when playing it on guitar, and thought it had good potential for a guitar oriented rockin' kinda remake...thanks for checking it out!

I had a lot of fun making it...so much so that I probably thought it was a little better then it is when I originally posted it...I get pretty jacked up to share my stuff with others so I kinda rush things to much without checking for out of wack things(like the bass guitar :o)....and while I can appreciate a well done note for note remake of a song, I find it a little more interesting to hear somebody's interpretation of a song, with there own spin on it...Thanks you for your comments...I appreciate it!

"dont listen to the haters"....in point of fact thats who you should be listening to because they are the ones who arent blowings rings of smoke up your arse......im not saying give up.....just take a look at whats going on ..re evaluate and grow from the experienece.....

when i play back some of my old stuff it makes me want to cry with laughter ...but its all part of the process.....

keep on going.....

"dont listen to the haters"....in point of fact thats who you should be listening to because they are the ones who arent blowings rings of smoke up your arse

Fuck you.

I'm not, nor have I ever blowed "smoke" up anyones ass. I liked the tune, 'nuff said.

Since you have proclaimed yourself etiquette czar, musical czar, and now have appointed yourself "truth czar", lets hear YOUR stuff. Ive heard tracks from just about everyone in this thread, and have read their critiques for 8 years. Nobody is blowing smoke up anyones ass, but you've obviously got a spindle up yours.

lets everyone speak their mind.....that was mine.

I like it. It’s got a good feel to the performance. The guitars and bass are the best part IMO. The gtr solo at 2:32 has a great tone, then at 2:47 gets freaky sounding which fits the performance style here.
