A Rode condenser through a Focusrite Platinum preamp sounds great. And you ahve the option of a retrofit SP/DIF card (beautiful sound).

My experience =

NTK + Trakmaster + SP/DIF card = quiet + clean + accurate + usable.

especially for hobbyist needs.

Zackly what I waz thinkin' ;)

It's still good advice... they still sound the same, even two years later! ;)

You can find the VX2000 for less than $100 new (NOS) or used. Damn good little channel strip for the money, IMHO.

Damn, the last post appears as "today", but is from dec/2006.
Well,to not "waste the thread" :D ...I know the VX 2000 Behringer, a "channel strip".
Gate, expander, eq, compressor,deesser..."all-in-one", but not a good preamp
IMO.

I used to own the VoiceMaster Pro and it had a very nice smooth sound to it. I actually liked it alot. And then I bought my Avalon. :D
