I don't anything about it, but GC has it for $39 until end of month.

I don't think it's your baby. I have one, and I don't really care for it much as a mic preamp- although for spoken word (podium mic) live use, it is a very useful piece, since it is primarily a feedback killer.

It's certainly cheap, so it probably wouldn't hurt to try it- but I wasn't really that impressed with the preamp. Mine is kind of noisy, and nowhere near as good (or as controllable) as the preamps on any of my mixers, or my Midiman Audio Buddy... Your mileage may vary, though.

does it...work though?
I really dont have much money and Im currently just micing my sm57 right into my mic input on my soundcard.

Will it sound better than micing into my soundcard and using its preamp? Is it really that noticable? And if so, what is it that actually sounds better about it?

I don't know much about soundcards and their preamps. However, the inside of a computer cabinet is a _lousy_ place to put a mic preamp- the electrical environment is disastrously bad, and your noise floor would be dominated by computer-driven EMI. So I'd say the chances are good that it will be better than your soundcard preamp, yes. It also has a proper 48v phantom power supply in case you ever want to play with condenser mics.

If you were looking for the usual standalone preamp qualities (nice "color", tubish sounds), you wouldn't get it here. But put up against most soundcard mic preamps- no contest. For $39- shoot, yeah; grab one. You even get a free compressor in the deal... What the heck!

but maybe you buy yourself a cheap small mixer like the eurodesk 804 (also from behringer ~85$). it has 2 solala mic pre's but they are surely way better than your soundcard input and you can plug in any other gear like eguitar, grandmaa's jukebox, synths... too;)

The small Behringer mixer is the way to go and doubles as an headphone amp.
