Hey, I'm looking to purchase a compressor and a mate has offered me his Behringer Compressor Pro XL for a good price, yet i am not that clued up on Dynamic EQ's and wonder what benefits i will gain? One of my biggest problems is unwanted noise and hum - will this be reduced with the Pro XL?

Thanks,

Lee

what's a dynamic eq?

sounds like you have grounding issues. try a ground lift!

Do you mean 'composer' pro XL?

It's not a 'dynamic EQ', it's a compressor which also has some sort of enhancer built in (and a de-esser and 'tube saturation'). So it does some things with some frequencies but it's not an EQ as such.

Behringer stuff gets a bad rap but the older composer pro was the one unit I've heard people say good things about. I don't know if the compressor in the newer one is the same.

Getting rid of noise and hum? No, that's not what compressors are for at all, in fact given you usually have to add gain following compression it will bring the noise floor up.

I dunno, maybe I shouldn't comment because I haven't used it but a compressor made by behringer with 'tube simualtion' and an 'enhancer' would make me want to run a mile. These budget boxes with loads of bells and whistles have a tendency to sound like shit.

On the other hand if he only wants £20 for it or something it might be worth a punt. You could always use it to prop the studio door open on hot days.

Compression will make noise and hum MUCH WORSE. You have to eliminate the ground loops in your system. Plug all your stuff into the same outlet and route all AC cords 90 degrees to all signal cables and as far away as you can from each other. Use proper gain staging as well.

Dynamic EQ's are really really cool tools. I am not aware of Behringer making one though. Like everyone else has mentioned above though, fix the problem before just blindly trying to cover it up.

Okay...

Hey all, thanx for all your comments. And yes deSwazchi - i did mean composer not compressor - can u tell i'm new to all this?! Apologies for all my incompetence. I blame it on my age. As for eliminating the noise problem from the source, ur right. I'll give that a try. I bought the equipment in the end for £25 so at least now I can finally prop my door open on hot summer days.

i bought a behri compressor, the MDX something or other, 1400 or something.

i paid $20 for it.. why not... barely used, i just have it before my main's set to limit just for some safety, especially when i play vdrums through the PA.

nothing special.. nothing like an LA-2A or an 1176LN ;)

No. Hum is reduced by shielded cable, seperating AC from signal cables and proper grounding.

"noise" can be hiss, pop, clicks etc. These can be reduced with good, properly made cables, proper gain staging and in older equipment re-capping the electrolytics.

A compressor or EQ will not solve any of these problems. An EQ WILL allow you to tailor a sound so it will fit into a mix properly.
