Behringer B-1: Good for the money?

Ok...reading this thread a bit...can anyone vouch or make some comments on this:

Is the Studio Projects B1 better than the CAD m177?

I have the CAD m177....and am looking for other mics but don't want to waste more money....I already bought the MXL SP1 based on gushing reviews....and it sounds basically the same as my CAD m177.

So anyway...if I have the CAD m177...is it pointless to spend money on the Studio Projects B1?

None of those are good for overheads, which is what the original poster is trying to do. You generally don't want large diaphragm condensers for overheads.

I don't know about the B1, but the B3 is a little on the bright side. I suspect the CAD sounds nicer in general, just based on what I've heard from other mics in the family.

Tell us what you don't like about the CAD (I assume you're using this for voice?) and we'll throw out some suggestions.

I'm not looking to use them as vocal mics. I plan to use them as overheads for recording drums.

If you have to use the cheap chinese stuff, mxl 603's work very well as drum overheads.

When they work.

All the Chinese mics I've ever used are prone to intermittent failure. You get what you pay for right?

I recorded an entire kit one time with just the at 2020 too!

that recording does sound really good, and it was only done with 1 at 2020? where was the placement of the mic?

Sure sounds like one mic, on a drumkit!

AT make good mics, no question. Your original question was about Beri B1 / Studio Project / etc. Chinese mics.

I don't know how to answer your original question, but it seems you are not open to suggestions / ideas / information anyway.

Good luck.

Here's a recording a friend sent me of his kit being recorded with just one AT 2020, and no other mics.

Sounds pretty damn good to me

Have you not read the entire thread? Many suggestions have been given, and I've been asking around in many other places as well. Who cares if they're made in China or not? I didn't know that was in my original question. I was steered away from the B-1, so I started asking about others. The B-1 was no longer an option for me at that point, therefore I don't care to hear about them anymore.

Now, if you have suggestions on other mics within my price range that are not the B-1, by all means share. The key word here is "cheap", but I dont know how China could have anything to do with that, and quite frankly I don't care. I'm not doing professional recordings here, I'm using a mixer and Garageband for crying out loud.

Anyway, thanks to everyone else for all your contribution to this thread. I'll probably get flamed now for my comments here, but oh well, that's forum life. I just wanted to provide the link to see what u guys thought of the mic quality, not to get criticized for posting it.

I did suggest other mics, read.

China is synonymous with cheaply manufactured products, that doesn't mean 'bad', things are what they are.

Anyway, check out the mxl 603, good overhead mic. Great on acoustics as well.

Actually I use the CAD and my new MXL Sp1 just for voice and acoustic guitar.

I like the CAD...but you know I am not ejaculating about it's quality. I don't hear any particular warmth or character on acoustic guitar...in fact any mic I have ever used just sounds like I am recording into a tin can...and my axes aren't completely shit...Taylor 110 and Martin DX1

You need to try something different

Monkey Allen,

I don't have the CAD mic but both the 177 and the 179 get great reviews around here.

The fact that the SP1 sounds similar speaks well for it. It is, after all, a very cheap mic to buy. I bought a pair and I like them very much.

I am still trying to find a used Studio Projects B1 based mainly on Dot's recommendation. But my guess is that it will also sound similar to your 177.

If you want something that's different get a dynamic or an omni or a ribbon mic.

Thanks,

Audio Technica Pro37

Hi,

For drum overheads I love my Pro37 mics. (The Pro37r is the same mic)

They excel at the high end detail that is so important in drum overheads. They are also fantastic for acoustic guitar.

Used they are $100 or less so maybe in your ballpark.

For something less expensive that you can get new the Naiant mics are highly recommended. I heard a recording Harvey Gerst made with the Naiant's as drum overheads and the cymbals sounded great. They are also excellent on acoustic instruments.

Thanks,

Hairy Larry

That would be because it's a large diaphragm condenser with a response curve tailored for voice. Using it on guitar is using the wrong tool for the job. I'd pick something with faster transient response for guitar, e.g. a pair of MSH-2 mics.

Thanks...any other recommendations for a nice acoustic mic/ stereo set of mics?

I have a set of Behringer C2's...I think they are small diaphragm...but they are Behringer and usually they get the shit kicked out of them when reviewed (Behringer in general, not the C2's)

one time i got a marshall 2003/603s pack for 100 bucks... i think that would be a good deal too.

however, the behringer is great for the price.

otherwise, i would suggest saving up for a studio projects mic

Did you ever get around to doing the mod for the 2003? It really makes it usable!

I still haven't got around to getting and modding a Behringer B-1 yet, but there was another discussion about it where an owner said it had Wima caps in it, but didn't specify whether they were all in the signal path or not or if there were electros in the path.

Seeing as it's made by 797 and their tube mics are good, I am thinking the Behringer could be made to be quite a nice mic!

I am starting to think it's just getting a bad rap just because of the name stamped on it! It's really a 797! Same as Studio Projects! It's obviously not the same circuit as the SP B-1 because they sound different, but still...
