"Dammit, Jim, I'm a keyboard player, not a fretboy!"
Well, I do strum my acoustic occasionally.

Seriously, I am thinking of picking up low end, beginners electric guitar and bass ($2-300 each). Any suggestions?
Thanks

Try the Fender Squire line. They have both an electric and bass guitars under 200 bucks.

The closer you get to that $200 mark as your low point, the more you see cut corners on things like hardware and fret dressing. These can turn into extra expenses later on if you keep the thing a long time.To be specific,I knoew a young man who bought an Epiphone Les Paul a year ago,the knobs on the tuners were made of plastic. One of them came off in his hand and he now has a new set of pro quality tuners on the guitar, but it cost him an extra $50.I'd suggest that if you have any friends or family members who are knowledgable about guitars, and a store near you that sells used, you might do better to spend the money on a higher quality albeit used instrument. You can expect better wiring, stronger parts ,and a better finished neck and better pickups which more than compensate for the odd nick or dent IMHO.

The quality of the tuner is a good tip-off of the rest of the guitar. Good tuners are nutheld, enclosed and self lubricating. Also make sure all your knobs and jacks are tight, plug it in to check for noises.

Yamaha makes a decent, entry level bass for around $150. Not bad if you are just going to dabble. I was surprised as to how nice this bass was for the price. Most any other new guitar or bass that I've ever seen for $150 was a total piece of shit.

Zakly what I paid for my red squire P - excluding tax & license. She takes me where I wanna go though.

Thanks again to all...
Guitard, gotta model name/number for that Yamaha bass?

There is a small sticker on the back of the headstock on the Yamaha bass that I mentioned earlier. It is "RBX260", other than that there are no other labels indicating a model or name except for the Yamaha logo on the headstock.
