Rock Steady
I been working a lot lately at job and doing some gigs with a couple of bands so my time has been very limited. I have been working on a couple of pieces fiddlin around with some gear. This is a clip of one. I got a high hat out in left field and the horns are a bit stiff but beat me up on the rest of the layout please. :)

"I jus don't know you"

That bass guitar has gotta do something more than the same loop.

I tried to listen to "I jus don't know you" but it kept cutting out after 3 seconds, so I checked out "Lift1".

I dug the groove and the vox, the drums sounded sharp and clean

the pi-anee (read piano) is a bit too legatto, it needs some bite, some snap

good stuff

Hi Kenny,
The horn sounds are excellent man...
I like the bass...rock steady...
nice Jazzy bed for a vox here....

Drums are cool but could use a few more of those tom rolls here or there...
lead guitar would be cool..
If you are gonna keep it an instrumental I would bring the harpsicord sound up in the mix...and bring the stringed organ down just a bit

What are you gonna do with it man?

Cool jam man...
Good to see you recording again Kenny,
Joe

Toki,

Minus the stuff you all ready know about, there's not a lot wrong with this, depending on how the vocals are going to be done.

Are there going to be vocals?

If yes and they are mellow, every-thing's just about right. If they are going to be more on the heavy side, then the drums have to come up and solidify the beat as they are pretty laid back in the mix right now.

Sound nice as it sits, this moment.

Cheers! :)

mix wise, there's nothing that stands out as out of place.....everything has it's own place and doesn't seem to have to compete for mix room......

sounds like a credits soundtrack to a cop t.v. show or something like that........i like the horns too

Hey Kenny, i'm gonna corroborate what elephant said, i tried to stream and it cut out after the first 2 notes...

you probably put too many hurtz on the top, the highest number hurtzes are the heaviest ones and your speakers get tired lifting them so maybe check that out..

I download and everything worked ok there,

Nice bass and I like the horns. This jazz sounds like a different style for you, it made me feel thoughtful and introspective. I like all the horns and electric keys but im not fond of the strings. For some reason i know the piano is a keyboard and i like it but the string sample doesn't work for me, perhaps this may sound wierd but maybe go with somethat that is less realistic? Bass is very good.

sounds good.. the only thing I wasn't crazy about was the strings.. maybe they just fill the space left open for vocals or some type of solo instrument.. the mix sounds good to me so far.. your sound is getting better..

This is some cool soundtrack stuff. I agree with most of whats been said. The mix was fine for this arraingment. There is a lot you could do instrumentation wise on this stuff. Have some fun with it...

I appreciate it guys. This one is a Saturday afternoon throw-together after I've done some room treatment, and some gear changes. I think I`m gettin a better room response now but will have to adjust to it. I thought this riff had an unusual twist to it so I kept it. It`s a scratch and will probably lay on the workbench for a while. I'll probably replace some tracks and samples (the analog string pad and add real bass). Drums will get some work eventually. Thanks for listening. :)

Outlaws; it`s just simple mix with some simple pickin. If I keep it I`ll most likely manicure most everything.

elephant ; I dont know what the deal is with the nowhere site, it streams ok for me. But this is the first tune I dithered down too, that might have somehting to do with it.

Joe; thanks dude. It felt good to get a little release after being so tied up with work. When the groove came on me I was hearing a blistering guitar solo . We`ll see....

Ghost; thanks. I don`t know what I`m gonna do with it. It just simple groove that got stuck in my head while I was listening to my room and some new mixing thoughts.

Powderfinger; thank you. hopefully any more new mixes will reflect clarity. This card I`m using seems to be up to snuff. Thanks for the prop on the tune. It`s simple as simple gets but I thought it had a neat lil message in it.

Khompewter: never had an mp3 not stream right before, I dont know what the deal is. This is a type of feel I like a lot, I just don`t have the pickers nearby to pull it off, I`ll have to collab to get it if I go any further with it. . Yep, I wanted to hear how clean this card was using these samples so pushed the hi-eq above 15k to listen for noise, I heard a bit but I think it`s in the samples. That string is a "metal pad" kinda sucks but it worked well enough to get a mix listen, maybe I`ll put some mellotron on it instead and put the grand in instead of the XP50.

Sam : hehehe that pad sucks dont it? :) I`ll do something if decide to wrestle this one on out. I appreciate it....do I get a raise now? :)

Myx62; thanks. Just a quick toss together on a Sat afternoon. I jus like to jam and this was working pretty good for it. You may hear it again some time and scream while running! :)

Man, this is great. Great production. The keys sound really good. The reverb is very appropriot.

Awesome job, Toki.

Hey blood, nice groove. Liked the horns...aint no Lt. but a man has to do what..well you know:D Glad to hear your back out there again playin live man..me too and i'm lovin' it big time. Keep the tunes coming ken, you've been a big inspiration to me.

not used to hearing that kind of music but I have to say... I listened to it like 10 times. Got a nice groove to it.
I have to agree with what someone said earlier though, I don't think the strings fit in that song all that well. I thought the driving bassline was cool though.

Excellent groove Toki!I've been playing along with this since last night when you posted it....it definetly has potential to be a tune....it would need fleshing out and maybe add a bridge and something a little different for a chorus section but it definetly has a hook to it right now as is....funky stuff.....I dig it.

Very tasteful light touches of string sample mix in the beginning ... never letting us dwell ... that they are ...

HORNS ! cool sound, nice arrangement of them ...

and the strings ... la la la :D nice ...

I like the key instrument split and contrasted with the guitar ... or whatever that is on the right ... they are interacting cooly together ...

horns again ... cool

Overall very tasteful, very ... soundtracky

I see like ... models walking up and down the runway ... or background music for some ... ahhhh .... magic show !

Wait Toki I was only kidding about the hurtz comments.. see i spelled it funny and i said that speakers get tired from lifting hurtzes, but they don't weigh anything! Get it? ahh just being silly.

I wouldn't be able to tell anyway. I went to the hearing specialist and basically this was my eq. Overall estimate damage for me is about 30%

Hey Toke,
Nice vibe here man. At first the wide stereo spread kinda hit me as sparse, but a nice vocal layer down the center'ish would fill that up real nice. ...Im guessin thats what you have in mind. Im not patch fluent (is that a harpsichord)  ....whatever it is sounds great. Really love that sound in this.

.....as usual, ...Solid my brutha

I believe that's a Clavinet.I could be wrong but it sounds like a funky clav.

Tried to stream but it kept breaking up, tried to download, the downloaded version was breaking up as well.

Must be my connection, I'll try again later.

SOunds real good to me. Not much I can think of to improve. You might be able to give that key part on the right side a little boost on the fader.

The overall level of the tune is a little on the quiet side. You have some headroom to play with...

Real smooth. Good job.
