Beck's Bolero, rough mix#2, need input

I recorded and threw together this rough mix of Beck's Bolero.

It needs a bunch of work still. I usually play a mix several days and jot down notes while I am working on what needs fixing.

I would appreciate comments from you all on the the mix, composition, tone, etc.

It will help me get the job done a bit faster having outside ears.

Thanks all, here's the link to the MP3.

Sounds good. I dont know Jeff Becks music, I have no point of reference. Mix seems fine, everything is clear.

I would appreciate comments from you all on the the mix, composition,

Hard to judge the composition since I dont know the original. Are you copying it closely?

A Bolero is usually in 3/4. The famous Ravel one and Alladins Bolero by ELP really use orchestration to their advantage. They build, add textures and timbres, usually ending with a frenzy. Might work good here.

Thanks David, appreciate the listen.
So far, almost everyone has said the drums need improvement.

A couple people said the rythym guitar sits funny in the mix.

I'll have some listens today while I work and jot down some notes.

Hi EL34,

The lead sounds fine, nice tone and all. I agree however that the supporting instrumentation needs enhancing. Could be my setup on this end, but the rhythm guitar is virtually lost, and of course you need this to properly set up the melodic lines of the lead.

What amp/modelling setup are you using for the lead?

Chris

The lead in the beginning sounds a bit to raw for my taste, but when you go into the stereo guitar, I freakin rawks.
Some of the best sounding guitar stuff I`ve heard in a long time.

The backing tracks is a bit weak, just give it some tweaking and it should be allright.

Playing is flawless, all in all good job.

Btw a cool site you have there

A great one from the Truth album....I like your tone alot on this...was waiting for the scream and crazy drum fill on the rave up part( I think Keith Moon did the drums on this )...would be cool if you could "rock" that part up a bit.Nice job!

Mix #2

Ok, I posted mix #2 up at the top

I removed one of the rythym guitar tracks. It had too much chorusing on it and it sounded out of time with the plain rythym track.

I redid another rythym track from scratch.

I added a power chord rythym track for more muscle.

I beefed up the drums and changed a few patterns.

I re-did some of the lead guitars.

I redid the intro and beefed it up, it was kind of weak.

I added some more guitar harmony parts to the end.

I bumped the Bass up here and there.

Thanks for the help on this.
Give mix #2 a go when you get time and let me know what cha think.

Naka: The tone chain is this.
Ibanez JS1200CA Satriani guitar -> Hand made tube pre amp - Computer sound card line in -> Guitar Rig 2 amp software -> Mixcraft and Beatcraft for mixing and drums.

Mix 3 done, tune done, I hope

Ok, I think I am done with this, Mix 3 should be it.

Mix 3 changes:
Deleted electric guitar clean acoustic sounding rythym tracks.

Added a real acoustic guitar, sounds way better. It's my Tacoma road king with fresh strings.

Added a big scream at 1:25 as per several request.

Adjusted levels up and down all over the place.

Thanks to all who helped me dial this in.

EL34 -

I couldn't get the link to mix #2 to work, but #3 is a big improvement over #1.

My comment would be that the punch-ins and transitions between lead lines seem a bit sudden and harsh at times. Nice work overall.

That's a great tune by JB, by the way, great choice. It reminds me that I need to go buy the "Truth" and "Beck-Ola " CDs! :) :)

.

Just listened to mix 3.....nice!!!!! Sounds much fuller, more depth. I like he acoustic much better as well.Sounds great!

Many thanks there Variaxman for the listen and the comments.

Not sure why I resisted getting out my real acoustic guitar for so long. It was fairly painless to restring it, set up a mic and record the new track.

It sounds so much better than trying to lay down a clean acoustic sounding track with an electric guitar.

I think I will go back to some of my other stuff and lay down some acoustic tracks while the strings are fresh and I have the mic set up. :D
