I've read almost everything I can find on acoustic treatments, here and elsewhere, and am now beginning to plan my room treatment. I have a serious buildup in the 200-400 Hz region that I need to get control of first, as well as some parallel wall issues to deal with.

I've seen some plans by Ethan Winer for bass traps that will work with my studio (I have a doorway that leaves only 5 inches between the door frame and the wall opposite my mix position), but I haven't been able to locate the 703 rigid fiberglass he discusses. Any ideas where to find? Or, better yet, is this comparable to the rigid pink Owens Corning insulation I find at Home Depot that comes in 1", 2", etc. thicknesses?

Thanks,

try those huge cylindrical cardboard things. you know, similar to the tubes you find wrapping paper roled up on? you can get these at a construction supply house. they are used to pour concrete pilars. sizes are from 12" dia. to 36" dia. what i did was get a 12 ft long tube 30" in dia., cut it in 4 ft lengths. i then cut the lengths in 4 sections (2) of them 24 in across the back and the other (2) ended up being 18 inches acrosse the back. i then put a plywood back panel on it, filled it with fiberglass insulation, and put cardboard ends on it. walllah! a mid-bass frequency absorber and high frequency diffusor.

Thanks for the note and idea.

I'm going to try to attach a .bmp file of my layout to give you an idea what I'm working with. The wall with the CD racks is where I was wanting to place some bass traps, but I can't get into the corners because of the door frame on one side and the closet doors/table on the other side.

Anyway, I'm acting like a sponge right now, just soaking up everything I can learn about this.

With the slot resonators, do you have to do both side walls evenly, or can you do the left side and back wall (opposite mix position) and achieve an acceptable solution?

The reason I'm asking is that the right side wall is basically inaccessible due to my wife's computer gear and the table it resides on (this is a "multi-purpose" studio), as well as a 4 ft by 4 ft window.

Thanks for the ideas, and any other advice also.

Hi; from north on I-35 in KC

I would talk her into leaving that spot. Just moving far enough to put in the treatment.

Darrin,

I've seen your location listed in OP, but never commented on it. My wife is from Shawnee so we get up there periodically to see her family. Since Wichita has lots of instrument stores but no real shops that carry much recording gear I always have to satisfy my gear lust and visit Mars in Olathe whenever we get up there.

Anyway, to answer your post, I broached the subject with her last week about treating the room, and it was not received very well. She was okay with me moving any of my stuff (including the CD racks), but don't dare mess with hers. The diagram looks nice and open, but the reality is that she also uses every horizontal surface to stash everything she doesn't want left somewhere else in the house. I keep having to move the George Foreman Grill so I can set my chair in front of my mixer.

Oh well. I actually have an 8x10 ft. area in the basement I could move to, but then I lose access to the computer which I use for a few little things, like finalizing and burning CD's. Someday I'll get my own PC and move down, but for now this is what I have to live with.
