Hello,

First post here; thanks for having me - :)

I am looking for a bass guitar which I can use to record several flavors of music. For the most part, however, I am looking for a nice full sound for Rock/Ballad and possibly some kind of country music. The music I've been recently writing, or at least the sound I'm going for is something like Huey Lewis and the News type sound.

Obviously, Mics, amps, room, etc etc will make a huge impact but I am not happy with my bass sound at all. I'm using a Precision Fender bass (standard) and I can't get a nice deep sound out of it, regardless if I'm using my bass amps or my buddies' set up.

I've been looking for a new bass and I'd love to get some recommendations. One I've been looking into is :

http://bass-guitars.musiciansfriend.com/product/Music-Man-StingRay-5String-Bass-Guitar?sku=515556

It has the price range I'm looking for, and appears to have the needed characteristics as well.

I'd appreciate some recommendations, or some input about that stingray. Thanks! Bob.
:)

There's nothing wrong with a Stringray - it's a very nice bass - but based on your description, you might be buying a Cadillac where a Honda will do. That's all up to you, but maybe something to keep in mind.

Also, in my opinion, a Stringray is going to give you a sound similar to the Fender P bass that you don't seem to like. It'll be bright with a healthy punch in the midrange. It might be exactly what you want, but on the whole spectrum of bass guitar sounds, the Stingray and the P-bass are pretty close.

I would suggest looking for a Jazz-type bass, or at least a bass with two humbuckers. At the very least, play something like this before you buy the Stingray. These are known for a deeper, more refined sound.

Good luck.

MM Stingray Is a good bass you might also want to look at Lackland,
MIA Fender American Standard Jazz bass, G&L, Zion Sonus, MTD Kingston are all Good.
or you could buy one from me:D

Thanks for the info - I hope to be able to find some local stores to try them out in person.

On another note, a conversation came up today about some pro artists' bass sounds, and I 'm wondering if anyone knows what kind of bass set up Shania Twain's bassist used. Just curious at this point -

thanks for the replies - Bob.

i'd venture to say 75% of the basslines we've all loved & grown up with .. were done on a fender precision...from country to metal from funk to punk...
