I just bought a used bass that has problems with the cable jack. It makes crackling noises and cuts out. I don't see any signs of loose wires or any obvious problems. Can it be just the jack itself is crap? Any info on good ones to get and are they heard to change?

Bass guitar jack

It could be that the ground (sleeve) contact is bad somewhere. Depending on the bass, you can probably fix it by taking off the pickguard and resoldering a wire (or soldering on a new wire).

I assume that you have done the obvious and tried another cable that is known to be OK? next step is to get a replacement jack, steer clear of the cheap asian ones, they have plastic as an insulator and are prone to shorting out, when in doubt try stewmac.com and get the ones with the fibre as insulation, they are inexpensive, try that and if it still plays up take it to a repair shop.

Going to GC tomorrow/

I'm going to G. Center tomorrow and I don't trust the sales staff. What should I get as a jack and what should I pay? I know not to get the "cheap Asian" ones so what should I get?
Thanks
