Basic Digital Recorder

I'm not sure if this the right place to ask this.
I'm trying to find a very basic digital recorder that I can use to make WAVE recordings and then transfer them to a PC and burn CD's. My plan is to run a line out of the DI outputs on my amp and straight into the recorder, using the amp to balance the levels. Will that work? In the past all I've done is use a passive mixer for my pickup and vocal mic an running it through an old tape deck (that I use as a preamp) and then into a regular mic input on my laptop. The sound qulaity isn't spectacular but it's good enough for what I need. Will my plan using the amp and a digital recorder work at least as well? Will one of the cheaper handheld type recorders be good enough or do I need something better? Thanks.

Those probably would work but I don't really need the ability to mix different inputs. I just need something like those recorders but with only one channel. Olypus(and others) make small, portable recorders that have one mic input and a USB connection. They seem like what I need but I'm not sure if the sound from them will be any good. Any idea? Thanks.

i'm interested in this question as well. i normally collect samples using my mindisc recorder and small stereo condenser. i'd love to find a solid state memory stereo recorder with a mic input. transferring samples unto my DAW would be simple (as opposed to the real time transfer that a minidisk requires).

Here's what I found by doing a Google search. They're out there, but still pretty pricey...

Do they need to be wave files? You might consider getting an Audio CD burner (Phillips makes some decent, affordable ones with balanced XLR inputs). If your computer has a CD drive you could upload songs to your PC off of that. There's probably freeware available that could convert the CD audio files to wave files as well.

Well, I realized that none of the outputs from my amp are amplified(ironic isn't it?) so I need a recorder that will also boost the signal coming out of the amp. Does that even exist? Am I going to have to get some sort of freaking mixer or someting? Is there some small, simple device that does nothing but boost a signal so it can be run into an unpowered mic input? Why can't anything be simple?
This also means that the floor monitor I wanted to hook up to my amp will also have to be powered. I'm going to have to get a mixer, aren't I?
