Winner chicken dinner!
So I've been using guitar cables for my synths for years and I just read the manuals for my alesis ion and nord lead 2 and they both say they have balanced outputs! The ion manual also has a photo "hooking up your synth" diagram with unbalanced cables coming from the outputs. WTF??

Anyone else make this mistake and switch cables and hear a big difference?

You won't hear a big difference. It might be 6db louder is all.

Okay. I use short length unbalanced cables anyway so it won't cut down on quality as much.

Not unless you are running them behind a TV, across a trasformer, live next to a radio tower, wrap the cables around a CRT, etc...

i thought the sound level doubled each 3db ?

Sound no...power yes...two different ideas...convoluted by the advent of "Hi-Fi" stereo sales hype in the 70's.
