Anyone using a pair of SP B1's for micing acoustic instruments? I'm curious how they stack up against the budget sdc's like MC012's and MXL603's.

the B1 is a quite neutral mic. what goes in comes out. it's good for when i want that. i don't have a pair, but i don't really need a pair.

my 603's are somewhat different. they are sparkly at the high end, which works really well for a mellower guitar, or for where you want the guitar track to shine/sparkle.

i don't have any mc012's to relate to, but my experience with them is that they're typically on the opposite end of what the 603's are.

the B1's do a fine job as long as you're looking for a "neutral/clean" recording of your guitar.

cheers,

Don't forget to check out the MSH-1O (O as in Omni) SDCs. Fabulous on guitar.

A year or two ago a lot of people were raving about the B1 on acou guit. I assume it is still suited to that task.

IMO the 603s and MC012 are both excellent on acou guit.

That doesn't answer your question, does it? :D

The difference is somewhat less than "opposite end", I think. The 603's are just a bit hyped compared to the more neutral 012's. That's good for some things, and not so good for other things. It's similar to the diff between a KM 184 and a KM 84. Never heard a B1, so I can't comment on the OP.

How they, or any other mic "stack up" will always be dependant on the particular sound source, the way it's being played, the mic position, the room acoustic, etc., etc.

In other words.......there's no definitive answer, although the above comments regarding B1's, 012's and 603's are all pretty close to the money.

That has been my experience as well. I only use them on acou guit, and on that application the two mics sound very similar to me.

The 603's have a 5 dB peak @ 7 KHz, whereas the Oktava MC012 has a 3 dB bump at that point. Knock down the 603 about 4 dB @ 7 KHz and the 603 should sound very close to the Oktava. Use a fairly narrow high Q setting (like 5 to 10).
