I was messing around with my reel to reel, calibrating it, and my 1st channel doesn't work anymore. I've isolated the problem though, it's in the channel card. It can playback fine, it can play a tone fine, but cannot record......I have no idea what could have happened, it was just working perfectly......Is there any routine things I can do to try and isolate what the problem is or anything?

i know this sounds obvious but,

clean the heads again. ?

did you check the azimuth?

no, I don't have 210 bucks for the MRL......

Haha but I've figured out what the problem was......At the time, I was adjusting (trying to) bias, and I turned the pot all the way counter-clockwise, forgot what to do, so went to the manual. I must have forgoten to finish channel one, because I accidentally LEFT the pot all the way clockwise :p That's all it was.......Phew!

Wait so let me get this straight: For bias, you turn the pot all the way counter-clockwise, then adjust it till it maxes out, then you bring it back how many db is rated fot the tape you use?

On my teac you should turn it to max then turn clockwise till you get a drop of 2.5 db

But you must make sure the traps are set properly or you will have troubles

anti,

i thought you already had a test tape??

on my 32 you bring it all the way ccw; then go cw until it peaks and then drops off "4-6 db" ...I went for the full 6.

my test tape came with 1 khz, 100 khz, and 100hz. My manual says to use a 500hz tone, at 7.5 IPS. Does that mean if I align the heads at 15 IPS, I could use a 1 khz tone? Is that how it's usually done? Thanks!

If the test tones were recorded at 15ips and you played the 1k tone at 7 1/2ips, then it would play back at 500hz
