Avlex/Superlux mics?....thoughts,..reviews?

The band I'm currently in will be ready to gig soon and I'm in need of drum

mics. Of course I have an AKG D112 for the bass and SM 57 for the snare,

but I don't really want to dump a bunch of cash on mics for toms/overheads/

especially since I'm considering converting over to electronic/(or) triggered

kit. I've seen the Samson, CAD, and the Avlex/Superlux mic packs and was

wondering if anyone knew anything about their quality, er.....well, you know,..

bang for the buck so to speak. Any comments or advice appreciated.
 
Superlux mics are the best bang for the buck in drum mics and handheld vocal mics! (imho)

The superlux mics that I own are as follows

5- Pra-239b handheld condenser (some people like better than a beta 87)
5- Pra-228a I use then on snare, toms, and guitar cabs
1- Pra-218a I use in on Kick, floor tom and bass cab
1- Pra-218b I use it on Kick and bass cab. Great kick mic
2- Pra-268ah I use them as drum O/H, acoustic guitar, and choir

For a snare I would use a beta57 or a sennheiser E609.
I seem to get better results with the Pra-268ah as O/H than I do with my MK012’s
I Love the Pra-218b on the kick (live or in the studio)

The Pra-239b Is one of the best handheld condenser mics I have ever used and it is under $80.00

When I let people use my Superlux drum mics they love them and ask where I got them. (ebay)

i owned a package of superlux drum mics. And i thought they were utter shite... then again those packages are going like hotcakes on local dutch ebay type sites for more than the prices new...... when i sold my package i sold it to the first person who would pay my asking price, but a week later the mails were still coming and people were bidding more than what those packages were new!

at the moment i'm using an akg d12 or d112 for kick, an sm57 for snare (i want a beyer m201) and some sm57 for toms (not bad but i want some more md421's) and mxl 603s's for overheads (nice but a lttle too much hi freq boost i'm saving for ksm 184's)

You could just buy a single condenser for overheads and use your sm57 for snare and d112 for kick. With proper placement it's sounds great.... And when you buy an electronic drum kit you still have a nice mic for vocals etc.


Oh yeah, at the moment i still have a superlux cm-h8c condenser and when i started out i thought it was pretty nice but, i still haven't found something it's good at.... someone wanna buy one ?

I'm with Thomas, I started out with a cm-h8c (large diaphram condenser). To be honest, I've upgraded to a studio projects C1, and the C1 is better, but not THAT much better. I was suprised how similar they were, but then again, they are both in the 100-200 dollar range, so I shouldn't have expected so much difference. As for overheads, you could buy mine from me (i have the shockmount that goes with it) and Thomas's and you'd have a pair for overheads. They probably wouldn't do too bad, and they would be cheap. I dont know what Thomas is asking, but I sure wouldn't want what I paid for it. Maybe 60 or 70 for the mic and shockmount. (the little clip thing that screws on the stand broke on mine, so I bought the shockmount that goes with it - it was about $30 and I've never even used it). You could probably get the pair from us for well under $150, which is pretty good for a pair of LD condensers.
 
By the way, if you wanna hear one of the superlux's that Thomas and I are talking about, click the link on the bottom of my signature. Listen to anything besides "Better This Way" or the live songs (those were done with different mic's), and you'll hear the superlux on the vocals. I know that I over-eq'ed my vox and compressed them a lot, but it might give you an idea of what you can get out of it. Hope this helps
 
I think superlux makes the Red5 drum mics!
Dose any know?

The red5 LDC condenser mics have the same outer body as the superlux mics but they are not the same mics, according to a Sound on Sound review. The bodies are probably made in the same chinese factory.
