Could anyone provide a bit of an overview of the different large diaphram AT mics? I am interested in the $200 - $500 mics that they have to offer.

3035, 4040, 4050, 4033...

Given that I cannot make much sense of the specs, I thought someone might be able to share there thoughts on what the differences/applications are for them.

Thanks in advance.

Jim

The 4050 has cardoid, omni, and figure-of-eight patterns, so that makes it different than the others.

The 4033 is a medium diaphram cardoid with 10dB pad and bass roll-off. It's been a workhorse in studios because it was very affordable when it came out 10 years ago, and it handles a lot of applications well. Acoustic guitars, drum overheads, bass cabinet, vocals, etc.- there isn't much it won't do.

AT4047, 4050, 4040, 4033. There line is so big now, I would have no idea which is the better mic to own.

There are some reviews at www.sospubs.co.uk

I have a low opinion of the 3035. The only mic I've ever sold. The 4033 (medium diaphram, I believe 5/8") is a true workhorse. I have a pair that are almost always on the stands. The 4047 has a tranny in it and has more color (a bit darker) than a 4033. I like this mic but wouldn't want it to be my only LDC. I haven't had my hands on the others you mention.

Hi,

I highly recommend the new AT4040 LD condenser microphone. Smooth & silky response and quite high in output also. Sounds really nice on a lot of instruments as well as with many vocals. It has a deeper character and tonality to it than their AT4033CL or AT4047SV. My favorite Audio-Technica microphone is the 4047SV in the large condensers followed by AT4040 the AT4040 (both mics having one inch diaphragms). Huge bang for the dough this 4040 is! I'd buy it without hesitation. That said, the 4047SV is a very unique microphone. It can pick up the high frequency content of the source in a most interesting way. You'd have to compare both to hear what I am talking about. However, the 4047SV may be slightly higher and out of your projected price range. I'd also look at the Studio Projects microphones while you're at it. Alan is doing a very good job indeed...:)

Pink, Great feedback.

I already have 3 SP mics. My reason for looking to another LD mic is to pick up a different sound. We have three vocalists with vastly different voices. I would like to have more than one choice for lead vocals.

I have a C3 which is slowly becoming the mic I use for EVERYTHING. I absolutely love it.

I look to the AT mics for a different sound.

Thanks,

Jim
