what is the overall thought? good for the price? better choices for cheaper or equal cost? cheapest store to buy from (online) ?.. just really discussion

Very detailed sound. True to the source. Very little coloring. How are you going to use it?

I bought two on ebay for $399 each, brand new. They are great on acoustics.

You may want a nice warm preamp or compressor if you're going to use it for vocals. It's not sterile but also not overly enhancing for vocals thus you may need something else in the chain or maybe EQ to give it some meat. On guitar it will be fine.

To me the 4050 is like a more useful TLM103. (because of multiple patterns) Use it where flattering is unessesary. When I run out of 4050s then I reach for TLM 103. (this isn't often)

If you get the 4050, you will also have a great Room mic aswell!

Take a listen to any tune on my last CD except "Welcome Home". They were recorded with a AT4050. this is an excellent mic. "Welcome Home" was the new neumann TLM149.

yeah i have a M-audio TAMPA and i think it will accompany the 4050 nicely

dagnabbit, i been responding in the wrong duplicate thread.

What mics do you have already?

Buy it, you will thank me later! If you find an inernet sale price, Musician's Friend will match any price! I think I paid $429 for mine. Cleanest mic! I've used it on everything! Don't hesitate! Buy one now! :D

yes, one of the best values in LDC Condensor microphones...I use them as spots for orchestral gigs and also for acoustic guitar.

The 4050, like the 4033, is NOT a LDC; it's more like a SDC. The diaphragm is about 5/8" across.

which would you guys recommend, the 4033 or the 4050? harvey, your input would be loved :)

4050 all the way. The 4033 is a more colored mic... a bit darker. The 4050 is one of those mics that sounds good on everything and great on everything else. Plus, the available patterns make it very versatile as a room mic, doing M/S, Blumlien, etc.

As for the diaphragm... it is indeed smaller than a typical 1" LDC, but the performance is very much in the LDC category IMO. I wouldn't compare a 4050 to an SM81 for instance where as I would compare a 4050 to a 414 or TLM.

I think the added versatility of the multiple patterns would make the 4050 a better choice over the 4033.

thanks guys, i wasnt sure if the 4050 had multiple patterns. im looking to get a new mic one of these days, and the 4050 would work nicely i think. i want something with multiple patterns but not astronomical $$.

would it pair nicely with something along the lines of a Really Nice Preamp?

$.02

if ya cant make the jump to akg414 then this is a good alternative... and actually if ya simply need more good mics graba few.... nothing wrong with them...

Harvey, I respect your experience, but I wont agree with you here.

It is widely known as an LDC, Audio Technica calls it an LDC, so that is what i am going with.

"technically" it may be an SDC, but officially it is labeled an LDC.

I know, "technically" the diaphragm is supposed to be larger than 3/4(though I dont think there are "exact" standards), but if someone is looking for the microphone, they WILL NOT find it under the SDCs, it will be in with the LDCs, as that is what it has always been known as.
