If the mixer with firewire will send direct tracks to the computer then that is a possibility. But if it just sends the stereo mains then obviously that wouldn't be very useful for multitracking, which is what you are doing.
Also take a look at the MOTU Ultralite. I don't think that M-Audio is the consensus other than it is the cheapest. Also take a look at the Digidesign Digi 002R, although that is above your budget.
On that subject, I would recommend upping your budget if at all possible. An interface is one of the most important gear purchases you'll make and is something you have to live with for quite a while. So getting *more* inputs than you currently think you need could be a good idea.
I own both a Digi 002R and MOTU Traveller and both of them are excellent in my opinion. I especially like the Traveler. Both those units come with their own DAW recording software as well.
