Is Audigy Platinum worth buying for recording audio? Currently i have SoundBlaster Live 1024, but want to get something better. I use a 4-track conected to my p.c, running Cubase VST 5. What would be a good sound card to purchase?

The Audigy is a GAMER's card - plain and simple. If you are taking computer recording seriously at all, do yourself a favor and save up a little extra $$ and buy something like the M-Audio Audiophile 2496 which costs around $150.

or another hundred for a delta 44.....i hope to get soon

in plain english

Instead of telling you how terrible the SB Audigy is like many people like to do I will actually answer your question.

No, you will not get any better quality sound out of the SB Live Audigy. It claims to be able to record at a higher quality but they just found a way to lie and put it on the box. :)

The new Audigy 2 can apparently record at true 24-bit/96khz but again, as had been said, it's a gamers card. I too have seen the light and am getting a Delta 44 this week! :P

Yes it does indeed record 24bit, but not if you are using ASIO drivers which would be the case with Cubase...

The Audigy Platinum says it supports Asio and has low latency etc etc, are you guys commenting on the PLATINUM range or the next step down? The kind of card i would really like would have at least 8 1/4" line inputs. Can i buy such a card? What are the specs on the cards you are mentioning?

Yes, there are many. Delta 1010, Audiotrak Inca88, MOTU has some nice cards and Echo aswell... The cheapest being Inca88, I use one and I'm happy with it. :)

Additonal question on Audigy

I seem to be getting great sound from the Audigy on recording. And the thing I like about it is the front end inputs which makes things so much easier. Obviously, I am interested in the best quality sound possible, so i am looking at other cards for the next upgrade. Do these other cards have all of the ports and/or the front panel access (which seems to be plugged into the card as an accessory)?

And if they don't, I was wondering if the Audigy accessory could be plugged into another sound card to get the best of both worlds.

I am currently putting together my new PC.

I DJ and would like to be able to use my computer to for mixing, editing and sampling, connected to my decks and mixer.

What is the minimum requirement for this? What is the sound like from these cards compared to home audio equipment (is it more like sony than krell??)

Also, I will be using this card for gaming. How do audiophile cards perform for gaming?

Thanks
Chez

Most prosumer cards come with an external breakout box that attaches to the sound card with a multipin cable.

You can usually run a SoundBlaster and your recording card in the same box with little hassle. Just remove the SB and install the recording card first to make sure there are no IRQ conflicts. Then reinstall the SB and use it for games and soundfonts, etc.

Breakout box

So would that breakout box connect into the other sound card too? Or would I have to ditch it and try to get another one with another sound card?
