What might I ask is wrong with the VTB-1? I've had a pair for awhile now, and have found them useful for quite a bit (don't give a crap about the starved plate tube feature, just the clean pre) - and yes, sometimes they may not fit my application, but they are not the only pre's I have. How does HYPE and MONEY involve the VTB-1? It's about $100 now which isn't a lot of $$$ for what you are getting (which I feel is a clean, quiet, usable pre with nice gain). I guess as far as hype, yeah, they've been hyped, but what the hell is wrong with them?

Have you used the RNP or RNC?

You really don't know what you're talking about. Have you ever used either one?

Why is it every time someone doesn't follow the herd they get flamed? I can only speak for myself, but I got rid of my RNC once I got my FATMAN which sounded better on everything.

And that is your experience, I didn't flame him for "not following the herd" I flamed him for telling me he knows more about my equipment than I do.
You like your gear, great. I like mine. There's lots out there, different strokes.

At least you tried it and determined it wasn't for you.....

i just wanna let you know that there are several other fine recording boards out there along with this one. the information i found and read is out there i just love doing my homework.
Perhaps you should read less and listen more? ;)

I don't think anyone's particularly interested in what you've read about certain bits of gear. You need to use something for a while before you can give a useful opinion.

I too enjoy doing research on products before spending my hard-earned cash on anything. Sometimes when I do finally get a product I'm initially disappointed.

Case in point was an SP C1. When it first arrived I was like WTF? It was not very flattering and I felt like a sucker and was ready to slam it all over the Internet. But then I used it on scratch vox for a few clients and guess what? As the tracks started building up, the SP1 sounded better and better IN THE MIX. The C1 came in to it's own and ended up being a go to mic for certain things. "Oh", I thought... "I 'get it' now."

Same with the RNC - until I had time to learn how to use it, I was not impressed. Once I got over the learning curve it has become a very useful tool. A VERY useful tool. That's just in my humble experiences.

Ymmv....

Okay, now you guys will find out exactly how much I know about internet acronyms... what the hell does YMMV stand for? Oh, yeah, another side note, I am going to Austin next week to get my RNC. Wish me luck!

OMG= On My Groin

I have dropped something heavy in my lap from the shock of learning something, and it hurt.

Or else it means "Oh My God", I'm not sure which.

Rolling On Floor Laughing My Ass Off as I type.

*HE* was playing off the last few posts..... :D

Well, Gemsbok, the RNC is what it is. It's true that it has no character. You buy a distressor for character. You buy the RNC to *not* have character. Just control the dynamics without a lot of artifacts and tone shaping. Yep, there are better compressors, and by and large, they aren't under $200, or even $500. So what the hell? A project studio is built out of a few carefully selected pieces of top of the line gear, and a lot of cheap stuff that works pretty well. The RNC is one of those. I would have paid the extra $25 or whatever to have FMR Audio balance the damn unit, and another $25 to ditch the wall wart and make it rack-mountable. Oh well, it gets the job done as part of my micro-studio, along with Korg PXR4 and M Audio DMP-3. The whole thing fits in a briefcase or a backpack. THere are times when I would like another RNC, I only own one.-Richie

Just feel like taking a drive eh?

the RNC isn't rack mountable? Also, what's a wall wart, i've read that term a few times and I don't know what it is.
