after thinking for a couple of minutes....
is it destructive to run both converters at different settings?
im using my old reel-to-reel board (fostex) for input and my computer for storage. I run out from the computer back to the board for mixing, elliminating (sp?) the 8-track.
Is there an easier way?

Ahem. I'd like to thank you all for joining me today. We've gathered to witness the spectacle and hilarity of a guy who knows jack shit about computers try and install and actually use a soundcard in multitrack recording. This should turn out to be another fun filled episode.:rolleyes:

Slack I can dig what you're saying, except I can't choose what you are choosing under the patchbay tab. See the atached jpeg and you'll see that the options I have are not highlighted that you have available and vice versa. I'm not sure why this is.

Also what are the differences between wave and ASIO drivers? I'm basically using cool edit pro so how should this impact my buffer settings?

BTW the background noise in the samples (not the clipping-ish sound) was a guitar cable in my mixer not connected to a guitar that had the valume way up. When I turned that fader down that sound went away.

Allright. I clicked on -10 dbv on the outputs, the tried another sample recording.iT started out great then toward the end of the bit the noise came back. BTW Nothing os being overdriven so rule that right out!

Now I'm going to dick with teh latency a bit to see what happens.

HUh. weird. this seems to alter the SPEED of the clicks! It must be somehow related.

As I'm digging more and deeper into this I'm discovering a very scary finding. The problem appears to be intermittent! It seems as if every OTHER track I'm recording it is appearing on, and sometimes mid-track! What's more, this is the same problem I was having with my OLD sound card!

Here is what it all sounds like together...:D

Just for shits and giggles, have you tried to record something like an audio CD or Tape via line in's and out's? It seems that the clicks become more pronounced as you belt into the mic and quieter with no input??? It really sounds like a static problem that I get occasionally (due to the fact that I smoke in the area of my computer and patchbay). I have to go through each patchcord and connection in the line to find which one (or ones) is fucking up, and either clean the connection, and/or replace the bad cord.l Try simply goung directly into the soundcard with a source (mic and then a line source like a CD) and record, messing with the input volume (as well as the +4 / Consumer / -10 settings) as you go to see if there's any difference. What kind of mic are you using, how are you inputing the mic, and what else do you have in you're set-up (I can't remember if you listed this already, so I'll have to go back and look). From this end, it really sounds like a static thing or a poor connection somewhere in the audio line. Tom.

Oh well... I opened the chatroom for a while, but didn't realize that you were surfing around here an hour ago. I'm gonna go pull the gas tank out of the 450SL and weld in a new trunk panel (in that order so's I don'ts blows myselfs up). I'll check back later. BTW, It's another silly thing to think about, but sometimes, if you have your computer networked, it can mess up audio stuff... Don't know why, but it's another angle... Tom.
 
I just increased the RAM on my system from 128mb to 256mb, my whole system runs faster and smoother.

It is also less noisy. Seems Windows had created a virtual swap file because the RAM was full, so it was constantly accessing the harddrive which on my system made a little noise. I think of RAM as the headroom of memory, the more the better. And at $20. for 128mb it's damn cheap headroom. It took me all of 20 minutes to install the new RAM module.

It's just to cheap to not upgrade.

IT's not static in my connections. I plugged a mic (different mic and cord) right into the card and it's still got the scratchies.

I don't think it's the RAM either somehow. It only shows up when recording, not when monitoring so... could it be something with cool edit pro? Hmm... let's try a little test...

OK I tried a test with my windows sound recorder and it sounded basically OK. There was definitely no rice crispies like when recording in coolpro. But when I check my buffer settings in coolpro all looks safe... 4 second playback, 2 second recording...

Eliminate the Variables

Howz about snagulating a free fully functional demo of Vegas and see if the soundcard still does that crackly crap?
 
Rats, you have your patchbay setup correctly. The reason that I had extra options is that I have a Delta44 which has 2 more ins & outs.

If the crackling increases in rate as you decrease buffer settings, then the crackling is dropouts. I'm thinking at this point that the problem has less to do with the soundcard and more to do with either your software or hardware configuration. What kind of machine do you have?

Have you tried this:

make sure in the Control panel:

MONITOR MIXER
all your faders are up, stereo groups are checked,and non of the mutes or solos are checked......slide your pan faders hard left and right....check off #1 AP.....

PATCHBAY/ROUTER
check off monitor mixerfor both H/W OUT 1/2 and H/W OUT S/PDIF.....check off #1 AP ( if you are not hearing what you are playing, ill guess you have WAVE OUT selected under H/W out)

HW SETTINGS
check internal xtal
codec sample rate to 44,100 (if thats what youll use)
check rate locked and reset rate when idle (i dont know why)
check single and in sync and consumer
check disable control of the monitor mixer........
buffer (set wherever it works for you....start off at the highest just to get started)

S/PDIF
check off consumer
 
of course, thats the settings if you arent using s/pdif.......

if you use these settings, you should be able to record and monitor everything.....

if you get pops and clicks, then its either your computer or some CEP setting.....since your computer worked with another card, it can be somewhat ruled out........
 
Hey Doc that may actually be a good idea. I may just have to try that. Maybe later tonight when I have a few minutes.

Yeah Slack my machine is a generic built by a small company that builds machines for the company I work for. They offered the employees a discount if we wanted to buy one for home. Ever since the day I decided that was a good idea I've been kicking myself. It came with Windows ME:( , I've had to have the CD-Rom replaced:( changed to a borrowed version of Windows 2000 pro then back (2 formats)...

There's a PIII processor in there I can tell you that.
As for the mother board, for the life of me I can't find a brand name printed on it anywhere. I think the model is a CS65-EC if that means anything. Last year I had to go to the manufacturer's website and update the motherboard drivers and the name of the company I can't recall, but it seems like it was something like GFC or something like that DFI or something. Can't remember.

Not sure what else I could tell you on that.

Deputy Dirgee: Not sure how I missed you yesterday...must have been posting at the same time! Yeah I checked all of that stuff and I believe at this point that I've ruled out the sound card. I was having problems with the old sound "card" (it is actually a part of the mother board) which is what prompted me to go buy a sound card. I guess the question now is is it cool edit or is it my system? When I get off of work I will have to experiment.
