AT3035 New User!

Just got my AT3035 in the mail today and just did a quick test with it plugged into the preamp & into my multiface...wow, it sounds worlds more detailed than my other mics and kind of a nice "musical" flavor to the sound. And of course, I'll review it for you all :)! Also might add some sound clips for those who are interested. Is anyone familiar with this mic? What are your favorite gain settings/uses? cheers.

I was thinking of the Marshall V67G because it looks fantastic mainly heheh. I haven't liked any of the sound samples I've heard though..it sounds almost choked with soime very bright peaky character (even though it has a fairly flat/dark frequency response), perhaps too smooth..but I hear this "character" with ALL MXL mics. The V77 exhibits it the least... I basically want to get it, mod it to sound significantly better, and use it in the studio because it just looks great :D...and increased clients to my home studio is a welcome change hehe.

Overall though, I was seriously considering the following:

Sennheiser MD441
EV RE20
Shure SM7

mainly because they've been recommended so much. The downside is i probably won't upgrade to this class of microphones for a while since I need to get some more instrument equipment, then some Mackie HR824's. What pre-empted the at3035 purchase was the amazing deal I got on it. Any other suggestions? cheers.

RE 20 would do you well for many applications (as I'm sure you've read) It is the finest bass drum mic I've ever heard and great on vocals. AT 4033 gets a lot of use too

Isn't the AT3035 the newer version of the AT4033..i seem to hear a bit of "fogginess" with the AT3035 on a specific low-mid gain range..perhaps slight distortion, but it only happens if it's placed a certain way with a vocalist..overall, huge improvement and flavore to my mic collection :)

The 4033 and 3035 are different models, not the same.
Watch out for "nasality" with the 4033.
It has a reputation for tracking better to analog over digital,
other things being equal, with some users.
(assuming you don't have a Fatso Jr. handy!)
Haven't tried the 3035 out yet.

The RE20 would be an excellent addition for you eventually,
partly because it works so well on various voices.

Wow Kenny, I've had awesome experience with the AT3035 on guitar cabs. I found that it kind of sucks on acoustic guitar, just my experience though. I have read reviews where people praised it on acoustic though.

The AT3035 exhibits very little sibilance problems in my experience also.

P.S. Warhead--- When I tracked the cabs with the 3035, it seemed to lack depth. maybe I didn't work with it enough, I go to my 421's pretty quickly for a cab lately ........maybe I should be more patient?
 
Kenny, I find the AT3035 to be extremely easy to zero in on the speaker's sweet spot and find the right sound. The frequency response is very well matched to cab mic'ing in my opinion. I never thought it lacked any depth on any cab I've used it on. If you're having success with your 421's then I guess I wouldn't sweat it! :)

I've purchased 2 AT3035's in the past 6 weeks and although I haven't had a lot of time to record with them, they totally blew away my other condensers in the few trials I've done. I did a side by side in mono and the difference was startling. :D

Contrary to what was stated elsewhere on this thread, I found a real presence with the mics on acoustic guitar (albeit classicals). I do more distance micing and this is the first mic I've used where it gave a warm close presence to the sound. I'm very happy with the choice I made and would do so again.

Kenny, I generally point the mic dead center and start about 10" out and start working my way in. Off axis mic'ing can cause some strange high frequency messes and I just don't dig it in most cases when going for the actual sound of the speaker.

The Safe Sound Audio P1 is the preamp we sell, but it's also an instrument D.I. / line level / expander / compressor / limiter as well, with an onboard monitoring section to allow for no latency monitoring through headphones while tracking. The P1 has one of the slickest compressor / limiter sections around at any price. Quite a versatile box! (more than just a preamp) :)

I think you'll see a national mag print review on the P1 in the coming weeks.

A friend imported a Nuendo project into my system the other day to do some mixing here, and the acoustic track was done with an AT3035. I was impressed, I had never had luck with it myself on acoustic but it shined with that guitar (whatever it was).

I had some real good sounds on a classical guitar with the 3035. I used my boards pres (tascam 3500) and just a tad of comp/limit on the way in (tl audio). A couple of pieces come up fantastic with just a tad of verb added to the recording. I had it @ 12th fret slightly off axis (towards sound hole).
It sounded awsome just like that in mono...
 
Sen, I would be very interested to hear a classical guitar recorded with the 3035, as I will hopefully be getting both in the near future. Is it possible for you to post a clip of a recording of a clasical guitar where you used the mic? Thanks.
