At 4040 versus Preamp?

Speaking of preamps, is anyone familiar with the Studio Projects vtb1 pre? Seems pretty resonable on the low end. How would this compare to the DMP3, paired with a good vocal mic?
I think it's on a par with the DMP3, but it's only single channel. So, for the price, the DMP3 is a better buy.

If you do that and still have trouble, try engaging the -10db pad switch on the mic.

i would still suggest he check his gain staging procedures...your voice isn't going to distort a mic unless you're screaming REALLY loud, and at close proximity

also the fact that he has the same issue w/ the SM58 points even more to improper gain staging

Thanks for the tips. I feel pretty stupid here. It was a compression VST causing the distortion :( Easy fix and feel dumb for not noticing it. Serves me right for stacking too many effects and being unorganized.

Hi guys

I finally brought the AT 4040 . I went to Turnkey and i had another test with the 4040 and i tested out the 4033 . i thought that the 4040 suited my vocals.

When I got home i tried it with my Focusrite twintrak pro . I did a quick test and laid down the guitar . When i was fingerpicking it sounded lovely, clear and warm but when i strummed it was slightly boxy , tommorow I'll try it with the bass roll off . and try and find the sweet spot but i am confident that i will get the right sound.
I was hardly singing with my full vocal strength as it was getting late and i was worried about my neighbours , but I can see its much more fuller sounding then my At 2020.

So i am well pleased I may invest in another one soon so i can get that sound when i stereo mic my guitar.

Where were you recording, and how are the acoustics? If it's a small untreated space, that might be why it sounds boxy(maybe the 4040 shows it more than the 2020).

Hi pandamonk

As it was getting late in the evening i did'nt have enough time to get the sweet spot , i am sure if I took my time position the guitar right it would have been ok.

The mike will definitely be the best investment.
I have a mackie 1202VLZ and have compared its sound to some very high priced pres. It is really a very good preamp. Just use the direct-outs/inserts.
