The 4033 is a great mic and many prefer it for acoustic guitar. However, you should A/B the AT 4033 with the following (some of these have been mentioned in this thread already):

Shure KSM27 (approx. $299)
AKG C3000B (approx. $299)
Rode NT1000 (approx. $299)
Rode NT1 (approx. $199)
Rode NT2 (approx. $399)

Then make your choice. The NT2 is $100 over your budget, but if you like it enough, then you could look for a used one. I saw one the other day for $200 (only wish I needed one in MY budget!).

huh??

"The AT4033 is a small diaphragm electret. That doesn't necessarily mean anything bad about it, but just something to consider. "

I believe the AT 4033 is a Large Diaphram condenser...not a small diaphram. And Harvey...they haven't changed a thing - it's still a 1" capsule. The "new" SE version is just a "special edition" - SAME MIC!!!

I own a 4033 and love it for a ton of applications. Very nice on vocals and guitar. It has a high SPL rating (135dB) so it's a great all purpose mic...I like to crank my guitar amp and use it as a room mic with a dynamic on the speaker.......

Definately A/B whatever you buy to compare them...especially if it will be a predominant vocal mic...

The 4033 sounded great with my voice and I liked the versitility aspect...

The 4033 is nice, but it is not a large diaphram. The housing just makes it look like it is.

They've always used 5/8 inch capsules.

If you can find official documentation for the 1 inch capsule let me know.... I can't find any.

And on AT's site they don't even call it a large diaphram.

Anyway why should it matter if it sounds good to you. Duh.....

hmmmm....

....now I have to dig...

I just read the documentation and it doesn't say. Could have sworn it was 1"...

hmmmmmmmm....

hmmmmmmm again...

They (AT) don't group the 4033 with the 4047 / 4050 they call "large diaphrams"...

It's not grouped with the small diaphrams either...

I hate sites who don't give you the info you need...
