Any input as to the differences in these mics other than $100?
I have heard alot of good things about each a wonder if I can justify spending the extra $100 on the 4033. I don't have a wide variety of mics right now so I want a sort of, does everthing kind of mic. I already have a pair of very useful 57's.

I think they sound a lot alike. The 4033 maybe a little more mid-rangy and the 3035 a little more high-endish.

This is based on just playing with them, mind you. Haven't recorded extensively with either.

I have a pair of 4033's and one 3035. The 3035 I kind of inherated. The 4033 is like a Swiss army knife. It just plain works most any place you put it. It may not the perfect mic for a given application, but like a 57, it'll work. I really like these. The 3035 on the other hand sucks. The more I try to use this mic, the less I like it. The top end on this mic is too strident for my tastes. Just my humble opinion. YMMV.

I definately need a swiss army knife. I need all the help I can get. LOL

The 4033 was the first mic that came out that got me away from thinking that you always had to use an expensive well-known mic by a German/Austrian company. The 4033 certainly is listed as one the of "great, classic" mics. It gets used by pros left and right for all kinds of applications.

The 4035 is, IMO, a less successful attempt by AT to jump on the coat tails of mics like the TLM103 – which, itself, isn't even a great mic.

I have a 4033SE....it works on just about anything I point it at. The only place it really sounds bad is on my Leslie upper horn rotor. It sounds really nice as the over-the-shoulder mic for acoustic guitar, with an MXL603 handling the 12th-fret close-mic duties. I really like the tone I get doing that.

That, indeed, sounds like a good combo. I've been using an ECM8000 in the over-the shoulder position for nice, woody bass tones without the boom, but I have been giving the 4033 strong consideration as my next mic.

The 4033 and the 4033SE are the SAME... just the packaging and the supplied shock-mount are different........

Thanks Dot. The 4040 does look interesting. I was talking to the AT rep here in St. Louis and he had that new dual capsule kick mic with him. He might let me use it on a session. Have you seen this thing? One dynamic capsule and one condensor with a 5 pin XLR that breaks out into two cables. Very interesting.

I am interested in both the AT4040 and this new dual capsel AT mic...

Can someone explain the point of having the dual capsel?
