seriously, are basements the best for building a studio in to avoid outside noise?

...or is the rest of the house just as good?

Getting the materials down there is a bitch. but in my place its the best option.

just be sure to build a little soundproof room for the utilities area. That is key. you dont need the heater kicking on durring tracking.

Yeah - I think a basement is great as well... especially if the "studio" area is under-ground (better sound isolation).

I'm in the process of building my studio and should have pics posted soon.

Only problem is that they always seem to have a low ceiling. like 7 foot!!

cheers

Another problem over here is that basements are really sensitive for water. Even if you do great isolation works, with heavy storms there'll still be water in your basement.

Water and ceiling issues aside, I found that soundproofing-wise:

Basement studios are great at keeping sound away from neighbors

Basement studios are great at dispersing sound throughout the house above and driving the rest of your family freakin' berserk. Generally this is because most forced air HVAC systems run ducts all through the basement ceiling, where sound is conveniently propagated throughout house.

If you have no family upstairs, go for it. If so, think about how they're gonna deal with getting blasted.

My basement has 9 foot ceilings, must be a midwest thing...
