When recording what are the typical standards for each insturment in decibals. I know a lot of stuff are around -6 or -3, but I just would like to know what ammount of decibals are uaually best for certain types of instruments such as drums, bass, guitar, keyboard, and vocals as well.

No such thing.... you observe appropriate gain structure throughout your entire system to maintain optimal headroom across all your gear.

If you're recording onto a 16-bit recorder, however, you do want to try and keep your levels within 6dB of 0dBFS so that you maximize your use of the 16-bit resolution. In 24-bit systems, this is far less of a concern.

I seem to have the opposite problem, the meter on my board reads almost nothing but the inputs in SONAR are just about peaking. it seems there's no headroom going into the computer. and then, if i record all the tracks nice and hot to get a clean signal, it crunches the shit out of the master bus in the program, and still doesn't give much a reading on the mixer when it comes back for monitoring. I'm using a behringer eurorack mixer if that triggers anything. maybe the board runs at +4 and my soundcard is -10 ??? Its a maxi studio ISIS

thanks
