Is the Apogee Rosetta a/d d/a conv worth to get?

I feel this might be a major improvement over my converters and clock in my digi002... and will make my pre amp upgrade (chandler/ or GR) at its best.

I'm looking at the Rosetta 200 cause the rest are very $$$ and I can live with two channels. I do everything @ 96 in PT and plan on doing some reamping...

True/False?

I'd go Lavry - Been there, tried both, liked the Lavry better. The Apogee sounded much better if you add the Big Ben to it, but then you're even further off the $$$ trail.

Not that the Rosetta is a bad unit though...

Or the mytek....I liked the Mytek better than the lavry and MUCH better than apogee...and the mytek is DC powerable as well(the stereo 192)

I think its a little cheaper than the Lavry

Re:

I checked out the UA...
Looks good...but I found it for $2000+ and I want to spend < $1700 on this upgrade if possible (dare I say upgrade after searching threads on coverters vs. pres).

Also I couldn't find the Mytex or the Lavry on Musicians Friend or Sam Ash.com so I'm still in the dark of their prices and I'm still searching on google.

With my studio being stricktly for tracking and considering my price range, which improvement would make more sense?

1.)A Big Ben clocking an 002r and using its converters

2.)Rossetta (or Mytek or Lavry if its in my price) clocking and converting with my 002r as a slave/interface

BTW - so glad you're on this thread Albert!!

I'd go with option #2, I think you'll get a bigger improvement with an external converter like the Apogee/Mytek/Lavry/UA and clocking the 002R to it. That's *exactly* what I've done as a matter of fact: I have a Digi 002R clocked to the UA2192.

I got my UA2192 for $1,879 brand new, so it's virtually within your price range. If you want to know where I got it, PM me and I'll send you the dealer info.

The Lavry and the Mytek will also be above your price range if you want both AD and DA. I've not been impressed with Mytek's customer relations, very slow and spotty in my experience, turned me off to their products unfortunately.

That said, another option would be to buy AD and DA converters separately. Something like the Mytek Stereo96 ADC along with the Benchmark Media DAC-1. I have a DAC-1 and it's a great sounding DA converter, with better features than the comparable Mytek in my opinion.

Are the claims backed up?

I would avoid the Apogee and any brand that does not disclosure the specs of there units. Apogee brags about the accuracy of they clocking mechanisms but fails to provide any numbers that back up that claim. Lavry does publish the full specs on his equipment and answers technical questions quickly via email.

Keep in mind that the UA2192 also has built in clock distribution. It has two clock inputs and 4 distributed outputs. When you consider that, it does not seem quite as expensive. So far I really like mine:)

Mytek by far has been the best sounding to my ears. I auditioned the Lavry , the Benchmark , Crane Song, and Apogee when i was looking for a 2ch adc.

Mytek took it by a landslide. Lavry came in second. Benchmark sounded really harsh to me, really clean but clinical sounding. Apogee didnt even compare, in my opinion. I dont like any of their products, and the ADC was no different.

Myteks response time is slow, as they are a one man show basically, but their products are world class.

You wont find mytek on sam ash....it isnt really "consumer" level gear.

www.calistromusic.com has excellent pricing...

Tell Craig teddy from germany sent you...good prices on mytek gear.

Nice

Thanks for sharing your experiances with some converters... it's weird cause consumer/retail places do not seem to have much emphasis on converters as they do with other pieces of signal processing...
You guys are awsome for letting me know what's up!

id go mytek...in fact i did go mytek. i also have a digi002r and the mytek made a large improvement. i paid $850 for mine brand new at atlas pro audio.

Not sure that would work since the Digi002 doesn't have Wordclock  Unless you can slave it to the ADAT or SPDIF outs on the Big Ben somehow, but even then you'd be wasting inputs. If you had an external ADAT or SPDIF pre with WC, you could make that slave to the Big Ben, and the 002 would in turn slave to the preamp.
What does everyone think of the Lucid converters, or RME (especially the new ADI-2)
