Never Act Like U Know All
I have an oportunity to purchase a motu-2408 digital audio card 24 in and out. I currently have a Tascam TDM-1000 digital mixer. Its my first digital mixing board. Its a sweet board to me with its clean inputs and onboard effects. 16 channels, with 1-8 being analog inputs and 9-16 being digital. my understanding is, if I hook up the motu-2408 to the TDM-1000 with a TDIF connector, I can use the analog inputs of the 2408 and send them out to the TDM-1000. Can anyone explain to me, what is the purpose of having a digital mixing board with digital inputs if one has instruments with analog outputs?

The digital in's on the TMD (ch. 9-16) are a foldback for monitoring channels 1-8. You have to buy the mixer add-ons to get 16 channels of input, then I think you need another TDIF to run those into your computer. MOTU is definitely a reputable company and the 2408 is top notch stuff, but with the TMD it may be overkill (or the TMD may be under-kill for the MOTU, depending on how you look at it). A lot of TMD users use the soundsape mixtreme. Heard of it? I think it runs about $350. Depends on your budget, I guess. Either way, keep tracking.

I really appreciate that info. Digital recording is new to me. You were saying about an add-on for the tmd-1000? does that let me use analog inputs for channels 9-16?

Regaurds,
Mike

Actually I think the add-on has its own analog inputs. You know, I was thinking that for the price of a TMD1k you could probably get another somewhere down the road and use it with the motu (which i think has 2 TDIF's right?) I don't have this setup but I did do some research on it, so you'd be doing yourself a favor to double-check any advice I give. Try http://www.tascam.com This site used to have user forums for all sorts of tascam gear. Knowledgeable people there, using similar rigs. Good luck.
