Anyone want to mix?

It's very easy.

Open Notepad

type in the url to the mp3 you want to stream. The url can be static (
) or dynamic (1.mp3).

Example:

1.mp3

Save the file as 1.m3u. When someone clicks on the 1.m3u file it will start streaming 1.mp3

You can also make a "playlist"

Example:
create allsongs.m3u with content:

mix1.mp3
mix2.mp3
mix3.mp3
etc, etc, etc.

Hope this helps. Let me know if you have any questions.

I gotcha. I've read about that online, it's not true streaming as it downloads the file and plays back while doing so, so it's kida psudo streaming. I can do that no problem. I probably won't get around to making the page today, I'm recording vocals for a demo probably for the rest of the day, but I'll get it up as soon as possible.

BTW my new mix is up. Wav format only, still at the same addy.

From beginers every where allow me to say thanks for ALL of your effort. You rock!

dave

oh yeah...thanks

If anyone is actually interested I could write up a litttle bit about what I did and why. Not really sure where to start since I spent quite a bit of time tweaking it and probably made hundreds of tweaks. I figure I have about 15 hours in it, but alot of that was troubleshooting an annoying interferance in my sound card. Turned out to be my cell phone sitting next to the computer I think...
Here's a screen shot of Acid.. I could probably make a web page with all the screen shots of various plug settings ect and maybe a little bit on some of the editing I did. The more I work with Acid the more I dig it. Not an app really suited to heavy duty multitracking, but it's so easy to edit with it...

Screen shot. 56k dialup warning since it's 250k at the res of my monitor.

I think your mix was way too rich with reverb and the vocals werent eq'd properly.. Way too muddy, the whole track sounds muddy, really really heavy in the mids..

guitar sounds like you put reverb on it? sounds awful, the whole track sounds like its behind a pillow..

its all a learning thing though.. You mix with monitors?

You just gotta train your ears, my ears arent as best trained as some of the other guys on this site but i do well for my setup.. I really shoulda waited before postin mines cuz i put a tiny bit too much into the high's for the vocals..

anyway enjoy n keep it up

sounds pretty good

but it seems like you mixed it low... I usually like to get my tracks sounding the loudest as possible without distortion, run it threw a limiter.. Vocals have a lil too much mids in them for me.. I dunno wat everyone else thinks.. Females voice could maybe be turned down a lil bit.. vocals seem really monotone, you mix in stereo?

the guitar sounds pretty good, but like i did on mine is i added some high's and lows to it too give it a better presence.. And the voice definately has alot of mids to it, lackin low's n highs, whoa, you got a pop in there towards the end lol, that kinda cought me off guard lol..

i mixed it for him too fast and got a tinny sort of sound with T's and S's.. i shoulda taken a brake n came back but thats what u get when you halfass stuff..

Its just the tracks ive listened too sound really monitone and muddy...

maybe its just my ears :(

he jus doesnt have enough of a nice enough presence in some of these..

maybe just me though, im no master :)

anyway enjoy..

I spent about an hour tweaking the previous mix I did because I listened to it at a louder volume than when I initially mixed it and I heard some obvious flaws in that mix. I also detailed what I did with some screen shots and a description. I'd love to get a critique. The descriptions and song are at the link below.

Here's Mine,

Larry's Mix

I listened to most of them, I don't think mines as loud as most. Maybe I need to boost mine some. Here's what I did:

Monoed the guitar tracks and doubled them. Pan one hard left and the other hard right and put a 17ms delay on the right and boosted the right volume about 1db. Also added a med chorus on the the main guitar. Did the same with the BG guitar, but no chorus.

Vocals. Added comp. and reverb. to me it sounds like too much at the beginning of the song but near the end it sounds good.

BG Vocals - just a tad reverb.

Very little EQ. I just tried to adjust volume levels of each track. I think I put a low cut on the guitar tracks but it probably didn't need it. (no bass instruments)

Daffy,

Can I go to Hawaii with you, :D :D :D

Daffy gets my vote, Very nice.

BTW Kirk! Awesome song, nice job on the BG guitar parts and vocals. Great Arrangement. Very catchy. I can't get the tune out of my head.

Ouch. Well then, I guess no reason to explain what I did. I like it though. Just need a little more time figuring out my monitors. New monitors... actually first monitors. Mixed alot on home speakers and my computer speakers through the years though. Probably would've done better for this if I stuck to the computer speakers since I have a pretty good idea of how they translate...

No reverb on the guitar. Multitap delay panned left/right 1st generation is 53ms panned 65% right and the second one is only 14 ms panned 65% left. No EQ other than cut anything off below 100 Hz. That's almost no effect, really. just enough to widen it out a bit. If the guitar sound sucks, it could be the delays causing a slight phase cancelation. I just wanted to try something different to widen it out a touch without being obvious, and it sounded good on the monitors. Probably a better idea would be to figure out the guitar part and double it to get the sound I want, or try ot graft on a later part that's similar and pan that opposite of the original part. Then I could get a wider sound I want without phase cancelation. Too much reverb on the vocals? Probably, but I though it was appropriate for the song. The only other thing that really has any reverb and delay on it is the female voice but I thought it needed something to make it little more "dreamy" and bring out the higher singing part. Snare has a little reverb on it but no other drums do.
Thanx for the heads up... Guess I'll keep keep tweaking...

Sure got that right, way to much E.Q.ing(where's the body), Vocals a little dry for my taste, not to mention ear piercing. Are you listening to you mix on other systems? overall the levels are pretty good though;)

page open to everyone!

this sounds like an awsome and education exercise, unfortunately organic chemistry takes priority right now. I would definatly be interested in seeing a page with all of the mixes up and an explanation of the different appraches. That would help my mixing int he best possible way. Keep in mind that many people could benefit from this!

When i get a chance, i'm gonna sort though this post and check out all of the stuff, then reply. On another note, if i throw a mix to be analyzed i hope my skin is as thick as some other people's. you guys are gonna make me cry!

I'm just starting the website. It's at www.watersignrising.com/mix/main.html . You can send me all your info here homereccer@yahoo.com Don't send your mix though, I only have 4 megs to work with. Send me a link to your mix, and you can send me your mix notes and any screen shots you want put up. If at all possible zip all of your files together.

Hey Everyone,

I want to start out by thanking everyone who has participated (and also those who still plan to). What follows is my detailed analysis of each of your mixes. If I missed any of you, I apologize. I currently have 14 mixes saved to my computer (for some of you, I have both your original and your re-mix). With the amount submitted, it has become impossible to pick a ‘winner,’ and so I have broken it down into ‘awards,’ for various categories. The list below is alphabetical, by your user name:

4.Lane – For this analysis, I’m going to use your first mix. There is a great balance to this mix, especially with the guitars. The rhythm guitar and background guitar complement each other very well, and the slight echo you have on background adds a nice ‘distance’ feel. Lead vocals have a good presence, but are slightly up-front, and almost seem separate from the rest of the mix; this could be a function of the fact that the background vocals are very quiet. This is a very pleasant mix to listen to.

13th_Omen - A clean/quiet mix. I liked how you brought the little tom-foolery (that was originally at the end) to the beginning, almost sounded like warming up. Lead vocals are a bit warm, but sit nicely. The echo you put on “fall asleep” fills that little gap in the vocal section, and sounds really cool. There is a nice ‘hall’ feel to the background vocals, and the background guitars sit perfectly. I like the calmness of this mix.

Anywhither – Absolutely beautiful work with lead vocals and guitar. The lead sits comfortably, and the clean/tight sound of rhythm guitar really helps the overall feel. I also liked the echo you put on the background guitar, but the levels of both background guitar and vocals are very low. They sound distant, which is pretty, but can barely be heard. This is especially noticeable in the solo section, where the strong lead vocals stop, and the mix goes quite. Overall, a beautiful, focused mix.

DAFFYDRUNK - As with 4.Lane, I’m going to use your first mix. They are both quite similar, and your first mix is truer to the original song. This is one of the most fun mixes to listen to. The first time I heard the drums/bass come in, I just starting smiling. It’s a very pretty and creative mix. The lead vocals are a little on the ‘echo’ side, and the lead guitar is slightly weak at the beginning (though it fits nicely with the ‘full band,’ it could have been stronger when it was alone). The background guitar is almost inaudible; I would like to hear more balance there, especially at the solo section. What I love about this mix is its uniqueness. The background vocals throughout (including the absolutely beautiful ending) are a nice touch, and the bass performance is excellent. I really appreciate the time you put into the ‘full band’ version.

Gatorhaus - Nice, ‘dreamy’ feel. Lead vocals sound great by themselves, but tend to dominate the mix. Rhythm guitar has a nice sound, but needs to be more dominant (it’s the root of the song). Background vocals need to have a nicer balance, as the high end is almost non-existent. I would love to hear this mixed with better balance, as the lead vocals are simply gorgeous.

Nik D - As with 4.Lane and Daffy, I’m going to use your first mix. There is no question; awesome drum work. The solo section is very nicely done, and the background guitar throughout has a perfect balance. Lead vocals are a bit up-front, and background vocals could sound nice brought up near the level of the background guitar (this was done more in your second mix). A slightly better balance could enhance the song a great deal. This is the type of mix that you can listen to over and over again. Excellent work.

Ocnor - A little bit overdone. The lead guitar reminded me a lot of “Neutral Milk Hotel.” Have you ever heard them? They’re awesome, so that’s a good thing, though that sound doesn’t necessarily ‘fit’ in this song. The background guitar cuts through nicely, and has a really cool ‘echo’ at the solo section. However, much of the light touches in this mix are clouded by a ton of reverb. It has a lot of character, and is a nice diversion from the norm, but could benefit from fewer effects.

Sk8ingsnowman - Clean mix. The lead vocals sound nice, but are distant from everything else. Background guitar is very, very light. Lead guitar sounds good, but could benefit from being brought up as well. An enjoyable, easy mix to listen to that could benefit from a little bit of character.

Sonic Misfit - A very nice balance, probably the most well balanced of them all. Lead guitar sounded a little bit heavy on the low end, but the ‘brightness’ of the lead vocals sat very well. Background vocals had a perfect presence, but that swirling (phasing) effect made them seem slightly disjointed. Background guitar could cut through a bit more. Solo section was nicely done. A near-perfectly balanced mix.

Strryder (private submission)

Thirst - Bright mix! Guitar sounds really nice, and lead vocals have a nice ‘cleanness’ to them. Background guitar and vocals complement each other very well. The solo section could be brought up some. There is a nice balance to the entire mix, but it lacks mids and ends up sounding slightly empty.

Welcome To Tomorrow

what about mine? ha...if you need I can send it to you again over AIM. "THELBIGS"

Kirk, glad to see you get such a great response to your project. You've done a great job of producing/writing/recording so far. This has been a great way to see the way others approach a mix. Props to all who've contributed so far. This was a very friendly competition that I feel we can all benefit from. I know I have!
Thanks

Shackrock - A nice balance. Lead vocals are upfront, but sound part of the whole. The background guitar is very nicely done, and I like how the solo section is featured. The high part of the background vocals is a little soft, but there is a presence in the lower end, which sounds nice. A very calm, easy-to-listen-to mix.

Does anyone have a place where I can post my mix?

I'd like to get it out there for everybody to hear...

Shawn...
