Anyone like mixing?

No such thing as to heavy...

One thing i've noticed with most of these mixes is that the bass overpowers everything to much... (not yours)

But i do like how everyone got the bass to shine through, I always have trouble with that.

Rooms

Charlie,

I heard the same thing regarding hot bass levels in most of these mixes. I would guess that some people have bad mixing environments. Without MASSIVE bass trapping small rooms will have serious issues (dips, and peaks in response) in the low end. Just a guess though :) I know my control room still needs more traps.

shee-it bubba, I was figuring that someone would say my bass guitar was too quiet and not enough bass, not the other way around

Pipe

your bass track sounded nice. Some parts sound reamped. If so what did you use? Your mix did not have overwhelming low end.

here is my mix

Hi there. I mixed it just for fun.. I would say it's really hard to fix this kind of kick as some ppl said already.. I'm a drummer, and I think this kind of music really don't need much dynamics(loud, quiet parts) on kiks as many ppl even use solid triggered sound.

pls. give me feed back to my mix!

Thanx!

hey o0charlie0o....

im jus learning to record...n i need advice on recording....

to me, the drums on the song amazing...compared to what i've been getting ... what kind of mics did u use n how did u position them? how high were the overheads? also, how far did u put the shure 57 on the guitar from the speaker? thanks a lot i appreciate it....

the bass went thru the UAD-1 preflex distortion during the loud parts. the kick was kick 07 from the ddrum library triggered with drumagog. The snare had a snare sample triggered onto it to combinme with it, that I made from hitting a snare in the bathroom then distroting the hell out of it, again fired from drumagog. The toms and backwards cymbals were just drawn in there

Hey dumass

Here is how i did everything:

2 Oktava MK-12's as overheads
- These went into a mixer hard left and hard right with no eq at all
3 Dynamic Mic's for toms which went in to the same mixer with eq on them

Then i took a left and right out from that mixer into my soundcard via RCA

The kick is a shure beta 52 into channel 1 on my dbx 386 mic-pre
The snare is a 57 into channel 2 on the same pre-amp

That pre-amp goes into my sound card via S/PDIF

Then i do all the eq'ing in cool edit pro.

Guitar i put right on the grill dead on the cone. I recently re-recorded the guitars so stay tuned for my new mix with that... It sounds much better.

The bass was direct into my mic-preamps "instrument in"

Stay tuned for my next mix cause it is sounding really nice!
I'll probably post it tomorrow sometime.

Then i'll post the mix with the vocals in it!

Thanks for all the help with the kick/bass frequency sharing stuff!

[edit] the overheads are on the sides of the set, one over the hi-hat, but closer to the snare, and pushed back a little, and angled pointing somewhat sideways (cause soundwaves off cymbal seem to go out, not up) the other one is placed over the floor tom, then pushed back like 2 feet or so and angled the same way... they are only about 1-2 feet above the cymbals in height, but probably 3 feet away from any cymbal as far as distance goes...

The kick mic is about halfway into the kick drum, more towards the side, pointed at the beater. The snare mic is basically inbetween the first tom and the hi-hat, pointed at the rim but in an inch or so, i don't know...

But the snare and the toms have mufflers on them.

thanks...now do u think it would sound as good if i got 2 octavas and didnt put anythng on the toms? would it be as balenced, or would the toms be too low and need to be miked?

There is a method of miking that everyone refers to here that is supposed to balance everything, but for my type of recording/music i've never ever gotten the toms to come out how they should...

However if you aren't doing like metal and loud guitars and all that stuff you could probably try that technique out... I didn't used to have mic's for the toms until like a few weeks ago, and had to rely on the overheads. I'm sure if you eq it perfectly you could probably pull something good out of it.

Soon i'll be getting another sound card with like 8 inputs and then i'll be able to put the toms on seperate tracks too :)

BTW, if you are a crazy drum player, that miking method wouldn't work to well cause you got the overheads right in your swinging path... I put a dent in the head of my mic... thank god it still works!

o ok thanks a lot....i'm mostly doing i guess liek punk/emo/some hardcore tho....so yea....

by the way, does anyone know bout the audix fusion f-15???? i'm planning on gettin either that or the audio technica mb 4000c....anyone kno anything bout them or have any suggestions? thanks...

little fix

seems like nobody cares my mix but here is second attempt.

Ok, well I'm recording the vocals tomorrow...

So I'll post the updated guitar tracks and vocal tracks tomorrow or the next day.

Nanahime, sorry i didnt get a chance to listen to your mix yet... Its currently 2:20 am and listening to music probably isn't the best idea right now... But i'll listen tomorrow!

Nanahime the one thing that sounded cool, but got a little annoying cause how the drums have a huge stereo field... Well the snare mostly.

But the mix sounded very nice!

Sorry guys, i'm so tired

I remember when i first started mixing and stuff and people would say how they spent hours on end doing things... And i never saw the point in that or how they could do that, or why..

But i find my self working all day on songs now, mixing, recording and the time just fly's as i tire myself out!

So i'll have to post the tracks tomorrow, but here is what i have so far:

There are vocals on it, and i'll post those tracks with the new guitars tomorrow too.

Where are the new tracks? Got some time to play!

Kirk

Eh sorry again... I went to a concert last night, but they will be up today, probably around 2 pm PST

Great, looking forward to working with new tracks. I am learning a lot messing with your tune.

Update... Had to stop by guitar center (you know how it is)

And now i'm going to have lunch, so tracks will be up in about an hour!
