Anyone knowledgeable on calibrating EQ levels?

My question is in reference to the calibration of the tape machine.

I have pots I can turn to increase or decrease EQ for hi and low speeds.

My question, does this only affect what teh VU meter shows or does this affect the actual sound to tape level of a particular frequency?

Example:

If I increase the low frequency for the High speed setting, does this mean that my recording will actually have an increase in low frequencies or does it just mean that the VU meter will be more accurate in showing the volume of lower frequency sounds?

I hope my question makes sense.

What type of machine do you have?

I would assume that the EQ is wired to the playback circuit, and will effect the playback. The VU meters are are post EQ usually, so they will be affected by the EQ, but the EQ isn't going to make the VU meters more or less sensitive. You should be able to hear a difference in the playback when adjusting the EQ levels. If you don't, you may have bad pots. And, are you sure the High and Low pots refer to tape speed and not the frequency bands?
