After reading all this,I have to wonder, why don't you just mix so that the master can be left at "0"?
I know it's wrong but,if it works....

Plus has anybody tried a track envelope to cure this?

Oh Lord - please help....

Why is it wrong to have the master at 0 if everything else is balanced not to peak it?

Q.

Well, when you spend 2 hours on a mix, add a few things and suddenly find you are peaking 3db over on your master out, you dont grab all the faders and move them down a db, it doesnt have the same result as turning down the whole mix but leaving it the same. Its not as easy, either.
So, it sucks.

Yeah, it's really no big deal for new projects but a huge PIA for projects already started based on having the master set at -6dB rather than 0.

I meant it is wrong that the master fader did not work, not that mixing at 0db was wrong.
