Anyone get this error msg on 788?

On start up I got a message that reads "system check fail". Unit stops booting up at that point.

There is no info on this one in the manual that I can find. I'll call Tascam, but I'm asuming I can solve this with a reformat, but I can't get it booted up to get to the menu. Is there another way to reformat? Could it be a hard disk failure?

If you have an old version of the firmware, this message occurs when either the hard drive has failed, or the current song is corrupted. In newer versions (I don't know which one it started with), the operating system opens another song instead of the current one, bypassing the fact you can't boot up with a corrupt song file. Otherwise, you may have to yank out the drive, put it into a PC as a slave drive, and reformat it from there. Obviously you'll lose everything on the drive. When you put the drive back into the 788, it will reformat it again with the o/s Tascam uses. This is assuming the drive isn't damaged beyond repair. Otherwise, put a new drive in.

Thanks. I have the newest firmware I believe, V. 2.02. My assumption was hard drive failure. I called Tascam service and they said that it could also be the main board. I bit the bullet and sent it in. Thankfully, I backed everything up prior to the problem so saving data is not an issue. They should get back to me this week with the problem / cost. I'll post the results when I get them.
 
Tascam called and said it was hard drive failure. They want too much for the replacement drive so I had them send it back to me. I popped in a new drive and it started right up. Tested it and everything seems normal. I'll be doing a session with it tomorrow.
 
Curiosity- but not that much!

Hey, if you don't mind, I'm new to this whole thing, and just got a Tascam 788. It's got a 20 GB drive in it, but I'm just curious as to what kind of drive you can put in this thing? I don't want to replace it! I'm just interested- is this drive-specific, or can you put, say, a Maxtor AT 133 in there?

I can't remember where I found it, but Tascam published specs on the drive requirements. Has to be 10ms access time or better, 7200 RPM or better, among other things. Most any drive you buy would probably fit the requirements. I think I bought a Western Digital 400Eb. Don't bother getting anything bigger than about 60 gig, the firmware can't make use of anything bigger. It was really easy.
