Hey all
just got an email to download 10 free VST plugs from cakewalk. I havn't had time to play with em yet but i'd like to know what you guys think. I treid the little green amp (or whatever it's called) and that will take some tweaking but it is a cool plug.
any comments? (i'm using sonar 3pe)

I already had most of them and only use one or two. Not sure what Cakewalk was thinking... users who frequent the net have this stuff and lots more... I guess it is for people who don't look around too much. Glad they are trying though!

Yeah, same here; I thought it was pretty goofy and cheesy for them to do, repackaging freeware that's been around for years and acting like they're offering it for something special. Especially the bit about requiring me to be a Sonar 3 user to get it.
Well, I guess it's cool to save people a little time. Kinda silly though.

Come on, spill, rjt! ;) Which are the good ones in your opinion? That way we can just go out and find those. :) I hate installing a bunch of crap that I don't use, and I'm not disciplined enough to go and uninstall it.

That Delay Lama monk guy looks pretty trippy. Even if it's not a very good plug, I might have to get that one just for the entertainment value. :D

Thanks, :)

Well, a lot depends on the type of music you make and what you own. For example, the free synth from RGC "Triangle" is included in the package. I don't use it because I have pentagon I, which is by the same company and a lot more powerful than Triangle. People can argue that Triangle save some cycles because it is less powerful, but I would bounce pentagon down to audio and Archive the synth... so it isn't that Triangle isn't good, I just don't use it. Similar to SIR... a good free convolution reverb... which in honesty is on my computer. I tend to use Pristine Space from Voxengo for my convolution needs and still use SF's Accoustic Mirror because of the quality of their library which doesn't translate all that well to other reverbes. Again, SIR is a good product I don't use much. Similarly, PSP Piano Verb. A reverb intended to reproduce reverb/strings in a piano... I have EasyVerb from PSP which I like. So in the package, I do like and use on occasion Freeverb 2. All of the plugins are useful. downloading them and having them around isn't a bad idea, it is just that I have downloaded about 50 free synths and a couple of hundred effects. Most I try out once or twice and delete (keeping a copy in a back-up folder of course :D )

If you aren't a freebie hunter, I would download the package and see if there is anything in there you like. A lot will depend on what kind of music you make.

The thing I find most interesting about this is the implied approval from Cakewalk for these plugs. Free plugins are fine, but can tend to destabilize a system. For Cakewalk to distribute these implies they've done some testing with them.

I wonder if it's that "you're in norway, so you can't use our webshop nor getting e-mails directly from us"-attitude...

I didn't get the e-mail either, moskus. So they are not just targeting (or more appropriately, not targeting) Norwegians.

Maybe it's Norwegians and people from NJ. :D :D

Or Swedes, I didn't get any mail either...

Do you need to download a free calculator too?! "Norwegian" is Sweedish for "New Jersey". C'mon, everybody knows that! :D

Of course they might have exempted the enormously talented. If that's the case and I got the email; then maybe I suck! :(

No e-mail for me either... so list Australia on that denied list.

In saying that I did get an e-mail at home from the company who make VSampler saying that they had doco for it now... I'll post a link when I get home.

Thanks for the helpful review, rjt! :) At least from the ones you mention, it doesn't sound like there are any real stinkers in the bunch, so I guess I'll just download the whole enchilada then and see what works for me.
