Anyone experienced with the VS-840's on board compressor?

I went to use my 840's compressor for the first time and I could onnly find compression ratios of 1.5-1, 2-1, 4-1 and 100-1. Is that all there is or am I missing something? Also, the available attack/decay settings don't seem to correlate to normal compressor settings. How are you supposed to get good results with this?

If this is as good as it gets, I'm thinking the 840's onboard compressor is probably not flexible enough for my needs.

If so, can anyone recommend a cheap, but flexible compressor to go with a VS840GX. I don't want to break the bank. I'd like to keep it under $200.

I can't help but feel your pain.
I tried several times with the on-board compression and got an ear full of mud for my efforts.
However assuming you will be running on to computer for burring a CD, I found that the compression in soundblaster live is kick butt alot like that of a vcr and there some 30 sec samples of my work on my web-page these are only this good becuse of the helpfull people here at homerecording.com! So an absolute rookie 8 months ago made these samples with a Roland VS 840 EX pumped into soundblaster live via line in with the levels cranked to edge of distortion and the puter compression to even her out a bit--->

Thanks for the feedback. I finally got some answers from a few people on some other fourms on this issue. I couldn't believe how limited the Roland compressor was compared to the boxes other effects. So, I've ordered an RNC1773 compressor, which has recieved a LOT of positive reviews. It supposedly sounds like a high-end compressor for under $200. Very WYSIWYG type simple design--which I like.
