Nope, but when someones trying to sell you a mic for $17 new that's "better than an SM57", I think you should ask them what bridge it comes with. It does come with a 15 foot XLR cable, an XLR to 1/4" adaptor, and a case. Now I'm really worried, cause that's even less money they put into the mic's engineering and construction. I wouldn't even buy a $17 mic cable!
If you've got the money to throw away, then what the hell, go for it. But I think this probably falls squarely in the "you get what you pay for" and "if it seems too good to be true, it probably isn't" catagories.

Agreed

However, I have found a set of mics that I think do very well as "reversely engineered" SM-57's and SM-58's. They are made/imported by Orange County Speaker (www.speakerrepair.com) - the thing that convinced me to try them is the fact that the mics are designed to pretty much exactly emulate the frequency response of the 57/58 capsules (with pretty much exactly the exterior construction as well). This includes the cardioid pattern and off-axis rejection.

The proof is always in the pudding, and I've now been using several of each type for over a year - directly alongside SM-57's and SM-58's - and they've performed flawlessly. In fact, the SM-57 clone is slightly "better" sounding in my opinion; the SM-58 clone is actually a slight bit more linear in frequency response, so the vocal tone is more clear but less colored than the actual SM-58. I like the SM-58's frequency "hump" so I'd probably prefer it to this company's mic slightly; however, for $39 I can almost buy three of these to one Shure 57. In the end I decided to populate the studio (garage) with the Audix OM series for recording, but I use the SM-58 clones for live performance. They work great.

That's my .02 worth. I don't work for Orange County Speaker...don't get anything from them (mandatory disclaimer  ). I will say their customer service is fantastic...once got an instrument cable from them that was slightly frayed in two spots (cloth covered cable). They sent me a new one, no questions asked, and let me keep the other one (which worked just fine) as well. They give you a "no questions asked" guarantee on the microphones should you not think they sound as good, or better, than the SM-57 or SM-58.

I agree on the Orange County Speaker Repair GLS versions. They are exactly as advertized! Excatly! I bought six of the ES-57s and three of the ES-58s. They are sturdy, heavy and sound just like the Shure versions, but a little higher output. This is because they are using neodymium magnets. We a/b'd them and found them very close but a little bit louder.

We use the 58's for practice and live, and the 57s for recording drums. They sound great!

(same old tired audio clip)

Nice track...

Here's a link to a video of our band live....vocals are from the ES-58 and the guitars are mic'd with ES-57s from Orange County Speaker.

linky

Nice drum track by philgood above.

sOUNDS gOOD!

cubanorocker, I wouldn't mess with that auction. Feedback rating is low, and they want $13 for shipping a mic.

Pyle????

what a name!

That's on par with NADY!

Pyle has been making replacement loudspeakers for PA system as far back as I can remember. I never heard of them making a mic before, though.

hey - no offense to anybody who might be named pyle or nady. it was just the first thing that came into my mind; in the context of a super-low-cost-product of course.

My pleasure!

I've seen this site before, and was really psyched. I forgot all about it, though. Thanks for the link!
I also am quite fond of their mic, patch, and instrument cables...the instrument cables have about the lowest capacitance rating that I've found (and they sound great), and the the mic cables are well made, nicely flexible, with very nice shielding.

And if you buy them in a group, they only cost about 7 bucks apiece. Go figure.

Glad I could help!

"I bet if there was pussy on that mic you'd be there right now!" "That mic probably doesn't even have the decency to give you a reach around while sounding like crap!"

God I love Kubrick.

I would click on the link to their site and email them. They have never failed to get right back to me with detailed answers to any query I've had. They could tell you how you might be able to do an order overseas (or who might carry them in the U.K. or E.U.).
