Unpossible!
I am thinking about renting a dedicated server. Is anyone interested in sharing one? Maybe a few someones?

Depends.

There are a lot of factors to consider.

It could be anywhere from about $5 a month to $150.

If there is some interest, I will start looking seriously for a good dedicated host - then we would have to see what everyones needs are, and set it up accordingly.

I am currently hosted in a similiar fashion, only I am one of the guys sharing another guys server with a bunch of people. It is a good way to go if you can get a few RELIABLE people to go in with you.

edit - BTW - I currently pay $10 a month for my share and I get a LOT of bandwidth. ( I just need more speed and more storage)

In my neck of the woods out local cable co offers a static ip and more bandwidth (They call it the SOHO Package - Small Office/Home Office)

Anyhow, it's about $100.00/mo and 250kb/sec Bandwidth and unlimited UL/DL

You supply a server in your own home and yer set. Might be something to look into - if you can get say 5 or 10 people interested if having their sites hosted with you it would cost you each $20.00 (or $10.00) each...

Well, for the same $100 you can rent a dedicated server thats on a 20Mbit connection.

If there is interest, and the interest is for lower bandwidth/storage (which MOST people would need) and we can get 10-20 people to commit, we could get the price down. We could have two or three packages - maybe a $5, $10, and $25 package. It will probably be cheaper than just about ANY hosting service, as there would be no profit involved. The fees would be soley based on the cost.

NL5,

How much storage and bandwidth do you need a month? I purchased a virtual server package for my web site and have more space and bandwidth than I need. I have been looking for people who might want to share with me. Let me know what you're specifically looking for, and I may be able to help you out.

It's not so much the bandwidth that I need, but storage and SPEED.

I started looking at fast connection servers (although I haven't looked into thier reliability yet) and it looks like I could get a 50Mbit AVG/100Mbit Burst for $219 a month. If I could find 10-20 people that would be do-able.

What speed connection are you on? I need about 10-20GB of storage and about 100GB transfer.

NL5,

I can't really accomodate your requirements. 100gig transfer is my max. You should check out the "re-sellers" plan at http://www.ace-host.net/. That's what I'm using for my larger files. If you want to test the speed, email or PM me and I'll send you a link to a file for testing.

Hey, I just checked out thier dedicated servers - it says they are on a dedicated 100mbit line - for about $200 - although transfer is limited to 1000GB.

How long have you been with them?

How is the customer service?

How good has the uptime been?

I've been with them for a little over 4 months now. I really haven't had to deal with their customer service for much. I contacted them when I wanted to switch from going month-month to yearly billing. They were very accomodating and gave me the yearly price retro-active to when I first started. Giving me credit for the couple of months I had already paid. I was very happy with the way they handled it.

Uptime seems very good. I haven't noticed any problems. I also have a few other people hosting with me, and they haven't mentioned any downtime.

Cool. Thanks. They look really good actually. :D

They also have a 5GB/75GB package that's only $6 a month if you pay for a year. Only 1 domain though...

1 domain = not really... most domain services let you forward a URL, you can all just have directories

I just put that package up for an individual that may want a cheap hosting package - the dedicated server packages have unlimited domains.....

Yeah... I checked it out too... it definitely offers a much better package than cable...

I just really like the idea of housing the server in-house... makes me feel safer about my data... but your way is definitely the way to go.

If you decide to go with a 1yr/ up-front payment, lemme know (PM) what it'll cost and I might jump on board... I hate doing monthly shit.
