Any users of Cubase System 4 out there?

Finally...

Christian Dettner from Steinberg has noticed our whinging on the Cubase.net forum and is going to do something about it.

I think we should see a solution soon :)
 
Hi there. Like someone else here, I just spent $1500 to record on this wonderful computer...and it isn't as easy as it should be by now. I just returned to music-making and things and am sad to report Cubase *still*, after all these years, does not work on the first (or second...) try. Argh.

This thread looks a bit old, but did anyone have any luck? I have had a variety of problems, the biggest being the noise when I try to record more than one track-- assuming it wants to record one track at that moment, which is hit or miss. It distorts badly and makes no sense to me.

Speaking of sense and lack...why don't I hear Cubase through my Soundblaster Audigy 2? I don't get that at all and have had no luck in making it happen unless I route the outs of the MI4 to the Audigy's auxiliary ins.

Any help?

Update

Okay. The firmware update helped, but there are still two issues:

- There is a 1-2 second delay in what I hear, which is not acceptable.

- There are random spikes coming from the MI4.

I have a PC that is essentially exactly what the *recommended* specs call for. This should be easy.

Many years ago, I spent two weeks struggling with Windows 3.1 and an MPU-401 interface...and with Cubase. This is so deja vu, I could vomit. :) At least this computer serves all my other purposes ideally.

Any suggestions?

Not sure I understand your question about not hearing cubase through the Audigy. I would think that you want to use the System 4 box for your output, no ?

If not the you would have to go to your devices panel and configure your setup to use the Audigy ASIO drivers. But again I'm not sure why you would want to..
 
Much better

It's (almost) all good, now. I set-up an amp fed from the MI4 and ignored the Audigy altogether. I have sound and can even record multiple tracks without the distortion. The only trouble still left seems to be that I get random spikes in the line from the MI4...maybe something to do with the USB, but I have a brand new USB2 card to try, too, yet.

Honestly, the spikes make it sound like a record playing, and not even an old one, at that. I could live with it until I get something better, I think. Considering I paid little more for the box than Cubase would've cost all by itself, I think it'll all be okay in the end.

Now to lay some tracks and do some laundry.

Just an update on the situation (why Steinberg can't ease our minds and tell us themselves, I don't know)...

I have been talking to a tech support guy and apparently Steinberg have been working on a firmware update for the last week or so. It's going to be shipped with System 2 out of the box, and a System 4 Beta is now ready for testing.

However, whilst Steinberg knew there were some crackling and popping problems with firmware 1.1, they did not really believe that many of us were experiencing HUGE distortion and low levels when recording. I basically got told I had a defective unit (which is funny because i've already had it replaced, so maybe *every* MI4 is defective!?) So I'm unsure as to how well this update will address our problems.

That said, I will see how the Beta version goes and post updates here.
 
Too bad ... I was considering System|4 as the ideal solution for my home studio... I've looked at various USB interfaces and the System|4 seemed like the best for my needs, as it comes bundled with Cubase SL ... Now from what I've read here and on the cubase.net forums I think I should look for another solution :( ... Any recommendations ?

I was also looking into getting the Cubase System 4 package, to use with my laptop (Gateway 7405GX Athlon 64 3200+).

Reading this thread has me really bummed.. Guess I'll head over to cubase.net, and read more.

Anyone like to update their out comes with the System 4?

Anyone have any other suggestions as far as a moble sound card and cubase SL solution?

BTW, I think Id like to at least be able to track 4 inputs at a time...
 
i love this site... salesman at GC tried to sell me CUBASE SL (Sucks Lame)

daaang...most places don't refund on software, which makes it all the more nerve racking for the joe-broke musician types.

sounds like CUBASE SYTEM 4 sucks to me...reading numerous threads.

I've been running Cubase SL for a year now and I love it. I don't know what the differences are between SE and SL besides the 48 track limitation, but I have not had a single issue with SL at all (of course, I don't track with it, just edit and mix; I've got a Mackie MDR that I do all my tracking with).

I use the System 4. I wouldnt recommend it to anyone. I just bought the godamn thing and I had problems from day one, and still sometimes there is latency. On day one I couldnt even install it.
