I've heard a rumor that if you use a muilt-effect signal processor, such as the line-6 pod, you can record guitar direct and ge just as good of a sound as if you miced the amps. any truth to this?

probably depends on the amp, the guitar, the mic, and the person listening to it

If you are using a crappy guitar with a crappy amp, recorded using a crappy mic and listened by someone who can't tell the difference between a guitar and a banjo....then yes.
But if you're comparing the Pod to a kick ass guitar with a kick ass amp listened to by someone who knows his guitars.....then I doubt it.

The Pod is there as an alternative. If you like it's sound, then go for it. If you don't have the money to afford a decent amp, then go for it. If your ears can't tell the difference...then go for it!

oh right, we're for real. benny has it right i guess...though I think if you have a crap amp, id spend the money on a better one before a Pod. Pods are good for variety.

well, my guitarist has a sweet guitar, a crappy amp, and a pod.

....wait...........what are we talking about?

You can tell when someone is using a pod or other processor and DI'ing the guitars. They just don't sit right in the mix. They are too upfront (good I guess if you are scooping the mids and recording death metal), too crunchy, and hard as hell to eq.
I've been recording with 10-watt and 25-watt amps for the last 2 years using mostly close mic techniques. I won't DI anything but my keyboard and bass. And even the bass is through a DI box first.

I've heard some really good results from a pod. They work well in the heavier guitar applications

I think he'd be better trading in the pod against a better amp.

I'm not a big fan of the guitar pods. However, the bass pods can make a huge difference when going D/I. Especially when you send it back through a preamp.

would recording the pod from a cab with a mic improve the pods sound or would that be a waste of time ?

Itd definetely get my vote.

PODs have their place

They are, more than anything, a convenience. They are great if you don't have a good place to record or have to worry about noise. Also, if you're someone who does a lot of different styles and want a lot of different amp sounds. Do they sound as good as the real thing they're modeling? No, but with some effort and skill, they can be pretty convincing, especially to the average person.

It really depends on your needs and perpective.
