ANy Soundcraft M-Series users?

I picked up an M-8 this evening, and although I havent messed with it yet, the faders feel really cheapo and plastic. Does it seem that way to you, too?
Sure is a lot bigger than I thought it would be. The box could hold a small stove.
Good looking board, though, pretty impressive looking.
Hows the mid-band EQ on this thing? Never got to use the midband on it. How narrow or wide is the Q on the mids?
 
wow, hard to believe the faders seem cheap...i've only heard rave reviews about it...

i actually just ordered an M12 from bayview....should have it before long..
 
As I recall when I played with one at the store that was my impression. Mackie is the only cheap mixers I have used that have decent feeling faders. Cheap faders are a big pet peeve of mine.
 
Not saying they ARE cheap, as they may be the best faders ever made for all I know. They just dont feel like I expected, and they dont FEEL tight. I like some resisance in the faders, and these have hardly any at all, like they arent connected to anything or something. Hard to explain.
The important thing is the preamps and direct outs. Other than that, the whole mixer is a headphone mix. I record a band saturday and sunday with it for the 1st time, I'll be using it in conjuntion with 4 channels of RNP. So, after this weekend, I'll have prety solid feelings about this board.
I think I'm gonna love it, though, even with the fader feel. As long as its ONLY feel and not really a cheap scratch-job fader. I do think I'll love this little board though.

hmm...well, thats dissapointing.

i really hope mine don't seem cheap to me...i read other places that they were good..i know what you mean about a fader that doesn't move easily...

if you turn the board upside down do all the faders fall to the bottom? :)

oh well, as long as it works.
 
I just picked up an M8 last week and I am just now starting to use it. I haven't used a lot of boards but they do slide easy? they work OK.

I know the faders on my Yamaha M8 are much harder to move than the ones on my M8.

It does sound good though, but I hope the faders hold up?

Good question.
I just went in there, pushed all the faders all the way up, turned it straight up and down, and shook it violently. They didnt budge at all. They seem to be great faders, they just dont have any resistance, like they arent connected to anything or something. No tightness. Nothing wrong with that I guess, I'm just accustomed to something with more "feel".
 
The right fader feel is pretty subjective but when you find that right balance of smooth movement with a solid feel it is like buttah.

The tip off to cheap faders is a lot of play side to side and inconsistent resistance while sliding. A good example of horrible faders can usually be found on any Alesis board.

I've been thinking about trading in my Mackie 1604vlzpro in for a M-12, so lemme know what you think of the M8. I'm just not sure if I can live without the flexible routing the 1604 gives me.

I have an M8, the faders are very smooth and do not have any "play" in them, but I agree that there isn't really any resistance to them. I too expected more resistance, but the actual quality seems to be really good. My M8 is currently functioning as the preamp for my Hohner Pianet, but my tape machine will be here next week and I'll finally be able to really use it as intended.

Hey... what routing are you actually giving up that the M12 wont handle?
 
4 assignable busses and 4 seperate auxes. I use it live sometimes, and that can give me 4 seperate monitor mixes live as well as a seperate sub send and 3 fx auxes. Also, I have a 4 in soundcard right now, and I use the busses for the 4 inputs so I can keep everything attached at all time to the inputs. IT also helps that I can send with the hot level I want but can monitor the input at lower levels. Currently I use 14 of the 16 inputs in my studio setup, and I would hate to start having to plug and unplug or use a stupid patchbay.

I expected the faders of my M12 to have more resistance than they did as well. They look so sturdy. But I wasn't disappointed for long. I kind of like them better now that I've used it for a while. I think it is more of a different kind of feel than it is that they are cheap, which I don't think is the case.
 
Last saturday I touched faders with the best resistance/smoothness balance... too bad I can't afford the desk....


It was a Midas XL-4... :eek: :cool:
