Hey all,

I am in the market for a new keyboard, but am really quite a noob when it comes to synths and such.

What I need is just a keyboard that has good multi-instrument sounds, has some sort of programmable beat/drum maker, and preferably weighted keys, although it does not have to be for sure. I was just thinking it would be nice to have the keys closer to a piano feel. I will be using it to go into a digital 8 track recorder, so an output jack that is bigger than a headphone jack would also be nice.

My budget is 300 or less, but I might could go as high as 500 if need be. Does anyone use a keyboard with these features that they could recommend? Thank you!

Nope

Not at that price.

A weighted key MIDI controller alone, is going to run you at least 5 C-notes.

Then you want sounds, and a programmable drum kit - which involves either a sequencer or an arpegiator, or at the minimum, a phrase generator (which I don't think is extremely useful to a pro musician).

Maybe a board that ran $2,000 3 or 4 years ago can be had on Ebay now for a few hundred.

You might be able to pick up a used DX-7 for around that much if you look hard enough.

For beginning, maybe a Yamaha NP30 for about $300.

Do you have a computer? I would take a look at reason 4. It will give you all the flexibility to create, then all you need to buy is any old midi controller keyboard... try a pawn shop... a great place to get cheap musical equipment. $500 is a good budget for a pc setup. That's if you have a computer already.

Good...but bad

Casio makes a really cheap, versatile keyboard that can do alot of cool things, it's just that the owners manual doesn't explain how to do any thing.
