Hi,

This one is as different from my previous post as they some.
It's a cover of this alternative band that performed in Europ during the early 80s. We didn't actually intend to record it, just rehearse, but we ended up with a full arrangement.
The cello-like sound is actualy a Fender Jazzmaster with an odd effect called E-Bow.
We are supposed to perform it live next month, with a female singer (which I haven't met yet. I'm just the piano-player...). If she turns out to be better, I might record her instead of this singer, which is not 100% up to it...

Called "When I Go". Originally by Minimal Compact.

I think it needs some rowdy electric guitar.

That E-bow sounds very cool but accentuates that dark tone.

I have to give ya a thumbs up on this one. I never heard an E-Bow before. Sounds Kool. Makes for a haunting melody. Well performed. I wish I could get my vocals out in front like that. Perhaps I will someday.

I am also really pleased with the vocals. The singer has a great voice. He loves the song and it shows.
Unfortunately, I just came back from a rehearsal with the singer that would perform with us, and she's dreadful. Oh well...

We're toying with the idea of another electric guitar, or maybe a Hammond or something. Although we were aiming for an "intimate" arrangement, there's no doubt that there's something missing.

Thanks for the feedback guys!

What, no feedback? :)

hey...isn't that what your ebow does?:p

the vocals seem decent to me.

the ebow is interesting, but now I know I'll never buy one, and use a synth instead.

I like the bells/vibes at 1:05+...as there is nothing else in that freq region, and it fills in nicely.

they're are some minor timing mistakes, but mostly would be overlooked. ..the ebow after two minutes is starting to get a little "heavy" to listen to. ...and I'd pan it out of the way of the vocals and not make it so prominent. There also seems to be some noise in your recording chain (like amp buzz), and the ending is a little rugged. This is an interesting clip, and fun to listen too. As the pno player, do you have any pull to get a good stereo sound on your instrument?;)

too bad about the female singer....good luck next time.

Interesting comments. What is it exactly about the E-bow that you didn't quite like?

I agree about the timing mistakes, they were overlooked because we really didn't spend too much time on this one. As I said, we originally made it as an "Enhanced-rehearsal-tape" to give to the other singer (which, of course, didn't help...).
There is an amp noise, or at least, the guitar signal isn't totally clear. The E-bow produced some weird overtones, and that cheap-ass amp didn't like them very well...
I don't think panning th e E-bow would help. As it plays the bass line, I think it would sound strange panned anywhere else then the middle, but there's only one way to find out... :)

I think the stereo piano sound is pretty decent. I just looked at the waveform, and you can defintly see that it's a stereo sample.
It's a cheap-o Yamaha though, and you do get what you pay for...

Thanks again!

I guess for the the fact that it DOES play the bass line. Maybe if it where chorus'd and "stereo-fied" and hard panned left and right, it would improve the tone of the ebow, while at the same time, step out of the way of the vocals.

Mixmkr - I'll play around with it a little.

The bad news, is the I found that the weird noise is from the piano, and not the amp. It's probobly a bad cable, but it means I have to redo the piano part...
