Hey guys/gals, please bare with me. This is my first post, but I've been using the search function A LOT!

My plan: Use a POD 2.0 to record guitar onto my computer.

From what I gather, plugging the pod into the "mic in" with the factory soundcard produces mediocre results.

I have an EMU 0404 http://www.emu.com/products/product.asp?product=10447 at my disposal (my sister's ex bought it for her to record vocals, but she never got around to it). Can this help me with hooking the pod up to my computer, as far as sound quality goes?

I'll be recording mainly rock type music (not really any clean tones).

I know these issues are newb-ish, but any help will be appreciated. I'm not really familiar with the capabilities of the emu, so any hints or ideas are greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Unless you have a MIDI input on your computer, an interface is needed - the Pod 2.0 is more about live performing than recording. The EMU has MIDI as well as audio inputs.

Gotcha, my plan was to use the pod to get my desired tone, then to the emu, then cpu. My computer has no midi input, so I'm assuming the emu is going to be needed? I can't wait til this makes sense :o

That EMU will work fine. POD L & R into the EMU and away you go. Be sure to download the newest version of the EMU patchwork software. That's how you set the 0404 up in your computer and route it to your DAW.

^Thanks! I'm borrowing my friends pod tomorrow, this should be fun.

Umm, you want to be plugging the POD output into the stereo LINE IN in your sound card, not the MIC which is mono (and treated as a different line level I think)

If you're recording guitar to your computer, you wouldn't even be touching a MIDI port. Guitar -> POD -> PC LINE_ In

You'll have a seriously good time. The POD emulation is great.

Cheers,
FM

^You know what, I have an HP MediaCenter, which has the "mic in" on the front panel. All this time, I didn't even consider to plug in to the LINE IN, on the back (soundcard). Wow, what a dumbass move. Thanks for bringing that to my attention.

Also, do you think there is no need to go: guitar -> pod -> EMU -> LINE IN?

Is the pod alone enough to go straight in to the comp?

Thanks for being patient guys, much appreciated.

The internal soundcard in a computer a really quite poor. The EMU0404 would replace your existing soundcard and would definately be superior. It is a "prosumer" card and if you can use it, I would definately recommend it.

cool. So going through the EMU (via the supplied usb) will bypass my factory soundcard? That's what I was hoping. I may as well start using it now. Once we start vocals, I'll have to use it anyways.

Is it fairly straightforward to sync (if that is the proper term) the EMU to Reaper? I'm sure there's a tutorial somewhere.

Thanks again!

Your link shows a PCI 0404 card, but it sounds like you have a USB 0404 box. Doesn't matter either way.

The 0404 box becomes your soundcard, but you should disable your internal soundcard in windows control panel. Plug your speakers or monitors into the 0404, remember, that is your soundcard. Load up the ASIO drivers, and the patchwork software. In reaper, you will probably have to tell it what your audio device is (the 0404 obviously) and you should be good.

Awesome man, sorry about the link, I do have the 0404 box. That should be everything I need to know (for now hahaha). Thanks for your patience!! I'm off to experiment. :)

On my laptop I don't disable my internal sound card/speakers. I use the internal laptop speakers for window's sound announcements like when shutting down/or when applications error and crash. But I do make sure my recording software is using my external interface as it IN/OUT.
